Worth noting that the tariff threat worked. Columbia is now allowing the deportation flights and the tariff threat has been lifted.
Why is this propaganda piece being repeated all over Lemmy? It’s an opinion piece praising Trump and pushing his strong man narrative, it doesn’t contain actual news. Colombia demanded a humane treatment of their citizens. That was always the core of the scuffle. They never refused to welcome their own citizens in their own country. No country would do that.
The tariff threats did nothing. If you read Petro’s statements it’s clear what and why Colombia did the things it did in this matter. And none of them were out of fear of tariffs or being bullied by Trump. The military planes did return to the US and Petro sent the presidential airplane to get those people. If anything Colombia diplomatically humiliated Trump by forcing him to treat Colombian citizens as regular people and not criminals.
I have now seen two or three accounts having this exact same wording and narrative repeated on a couple of posts about this here on lemmy. They repeat either word for word the same conversation or use similar phrasing.
Reality seems to counter what you’re saying, from the article linked above, first two paragraphs even:

Donald Trump had ordered 25% tariffs on all Colombian goods after its president barred two US military deportation flights from landing in the country on Sunday."
Keywords to determine the credibility of this narrative: “the white house says”.
It might be true, it might be false, but until the other party or an independent source with some actual credibility confirms it, we don’t know. It’s just more noise from Trump’s white house.
You’re misreading the quote, flip it around:
“The White House says the US will not go ahead with tariffs on Colombia, after Bogota agreed to accept - without restrictions - deported migrants.”
They aren’t saying Bogota made the agreement without restrictions, they are saying they aren’t going ahead with the tariffs. Maybe the excuse they’re giving is bullshit, but if they said they were doing it and now they say they’re not, that’s likely true until the NEXT time they decide to reverse themselves (3-2-1…!)
Now, if Bogota had not agreed to the flights, with or without restrictions, why would they call off the tariffs?
There’s countless reasons why they could have called off a tariff war, not least of which is that Colombia has a trade deficit with the usa, which would make a tariff war a very dumb idea for the USA.
This is all just classic Trump:
Make some dumb threats. Others explain to Trump how it will personally harm him somehow (otherwise he wouldn’t care). Cancel the threats and declare victory. The other party shrugs, but keeps silent to avoid harming Trump’s fragile ego.
Yeah, what else does the White House say that you believe?
When the people who told you they would impose tariffs tell you they are no longer going to impose tariffs, what else are you supposed to believe? They are the source of truth on that.

I changed the headline because he announced tariffs, not that he enacted them. I chose that word very carefully but a lot of people didn’t seem to notice.
Also very weird that people are accusing you of sympathizing with the administration when you’re the one that created this group to keep track of his insanity.

I see it like this, Trump’s mind is 100% fickle. He could come back with a 50% tariff tomorrow if somebody in Colombia is mean to him.

Colombia didn’t refuse to take their citizens back. They objected to their inhumane treatment and being delivered on military aircraft. The American media has become a pro-Nazi propaganda machine.
They objected to it, then immediately turned around and agreed to accept the flights without restriction.
Uhhhhhh what? No, Colombian demands were met. The deportations are flowing again because the US agreed to put the individuals on private chartered flights, after being fed, clothed, and properly vetted for deportation. All on the US dime. So the process before Trump took office. Sounds like normal ass diplomacy to me. US said we want to deport Colombian citizens illegally. Colombia said no, go through the internationally agreed on process, and the US said okay.

nations which trade with the united states, which makes up pretty much every one, are stuck, this is what means to be the only superpower in the world, the engine of economics starts and ends with the united states, folks can take their luck with china but china doesn’t even come close. not sure who you expect, and what form this “backlash” would take, but it’d be interesting to hear what columbia would do with all the surplus coffee it can’t sell if there’s an embargo, what would happen to it’s farmers, it’s shippers, it’s entire economy. this is why the columbian president changed his tune.

Such behaviour will lead to countries decoupling from the USA. Over time, this will lead to the USA having ever less power.

There’s no embargo. Colombia doesn’t need to do anything.
Trump is putting a tariff on the coffee. USA consumes almost 300 times more coffee than they produce. Even if they could produce 300 times more than they already do, it’s very unlikely that they can do it cheaper than Colombia. The price for Americans is simply going to increase by 25%
The backlash will come from Americans.
