Pretty much anything other than animals (and even some animals) :
n seems to be the number of genetic contributors. They use a “n?” when it gets confusing to roll over to the next generation. Otherwise, it’d be 2^(number of generations). The whole thing is goofy
n is the ploidy at any given point in the lifecycle. in animals we have haploid and diploid. Other branches of the tree of life get far far more creative. even within animalia I think some ants and maybe other species maybe have some variations on this? Some zoo person would need to clear that up. Im not interested in animals.
the “I guess I’ll die meme” is a reference to the fact that at least this species of Porphyria , which is a relative of the algae used in seaweed, it’s not even clear what the ploidy is or even if it’s consistent in that life phase. So when people get hung up about sex and gender, it’s like, my brother in christ, not even ploidy is necessarily consistent and you want to make claims about the scientific basis of sex and gender?
It’s can be confusing, but any undergraduate botanist has learned possibly hundreds of these diagrams and be able to think section some Porphyria to identify a gametangium. That’s just table stakes for understanding the actual complexity of life in this planet.
