It’s hard to shift from a mindset of following the law to realizing the laws no longer matter.

If they’re going to be used as a weapon, why would we ever comply?

I don’t get that. It just was not hard for me at all. Even if you were absolutely convinced Trump would lose, you’ve had months of him and all of his people just outright admitting they don’t care about the law both before and after the election. It was a foregone conclusion to me the first Wednesday in November.

Think of it as a mask. All your life you’ve had it on because you were taught to believe it. It’s how society functions, right?

Now you realize you could take it off, but it’s very hard to. What kind of world is it then? We will find out, of course.

There’s a Jules Pfeiffer (rip) play/movie called Little Murders that kind of deals with this. Be forewarned, it’s a very bleak and dark comedy.

A lifetime of reading and watching dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction prepared me for this.

But I see where you’re coming from. There’s a really interesting film called It Happened Here (interesting both in the subject matter and how it was filmed). It’s about an alternate history where Britain has been taken over by a puppet Nazi government. Everyone just kind of moves on with their life and accepts it like nothing has changed. I guess it’s kind of like that.

Not an American, but I can totally relate with that. Some politicians in my country have taken a page from Trump’s playbook since 2016 and have started telling blatant lies on TV, the kind that are supposed to be easily refuted by any one with half a brain, and not getting any serious pushback. It took me a long time to get past the “Wait, they can’t do that, that’s not how it works!” phase

They still matter to some extent. Most people in the US have an expectation that the government will follow the law. We can use their lawless actions rhetorically to erode their political capital and empower the resistance movement.

But I agree with what I think your main point is—we can’t assume a court ruling against an action means it will stop anymore. I was listening to Bernie talk yesterday and even he didn’t seem to understand. He was talking about the court ordering a reversal to the spending freeze as a victory, apparently unaware that they are brazenly ignoring this restraining order.

They will not follow the law voluntarily, that much is true, but we can still rally around it and force them to, or at minimum make it costly to break.

Possibly, but it’s important to make sure you also actually build a resistance movement, or this just amounts to speaking concerned words.

You could consider pointing out that the leopard promised not to eat your face, and is therefore being at best inconsistent and at worst downright dishonest by eating your face as you speak.

Yes, but it does buy time which might be needed for people to rally or, preferably, a few GOP house members to leave or die. After all, Trump is trying to overwhelm the system. Plus, while this is indeed the worst supreme court in the history of the court, they sometimes don’t vote as a bloc.

Like, birthright citizenship is a pretty big leap for Roberts, possibly for anyone else aside from Alito or Thomas (Kavanaugh, the bastard, has even flipped before). But I’m not too hopeful, better if it didn’t come to that dice roll.

Have you set up some sort of gofundme or something to get your wife out of the country? I know you’re busy with like 50,000 other things, but this is getting really scary. Their next moves are going to be disallowing emigration of all natural born citizens, if I’m reading this playbook correctly.

Being able to afford to get out is not the problem. Unfortunately, the problem is that I need to make at least £28,000 a year while in the UK in order for them both to get a family visa. But I appreciate the suggestion and I agree. Unfortunately, there’s not much that can be done. She can come over with a visitor visa for six months, but the house has to be sold first.

I’ve been watching the YouTuber Legal Eagle for a while now, and he always seemingly had a very idealistic view of the legal system, bordering naïve. It’s been real interesting watching this change in the recent videos.

Been watching Legal Eagle since he was primarily a channel devoted to pointing out the legal accuracy of movies, like Home Alone, and My Cousin Vinnie, which naturally led him into analyzing what crimes were committed in said movies.

His latest videos have been harder to watch than his Jan 6th video. That one is a damn near real time video of a lawyer losing faith in the system of law. These new ones are multiple lawyers that are losing their minds because the ruling party doesn’t care about the law at all.

Not surprising. Lawyers, like cops, are inherently right wing, as they are a part of the same system of oppression. Their ideology makes them think the status quo is perfect, and any systemic issue is merely a small error on an individual scale.

Believing in law and order isn’t inherently right wing, nor is wanting to change the system rather than raze it to the ground. People who say the things you do above are anarchist extremists who are just as loony as the facists they oppose.

I’ll jump in here and point out that the militarism decried in the song is one of the less-applicable criticisms of Trump. If anything the criticism is that he’s too willing to take Putin’s side, not that he’d lead us to nuclear war. At least not intentionally.

If you want a more Trump-appropriate 80s punk song to select lyrics from I might suggest “Kill the poor” by the Dead Kennedys (referring to the apocryphal notion of using neutron bombs to eliminate the poors without harming property values). Although honestly if you wanna get some proper hot takes on maga you’ll do best dispensing with the 80s entirely and going with NOFX.
