Or don’t subscribe and wait until a lifetime option appears. I fucking hate subscriptions, every single company, tool, or software use it. No one can go one day without letting a customer actually own shit. It’s so god damn annoying.

I agree with some things, I don’t do subscriptions most of the time but for something like this that is developed by one guy for his livelihood, I can understand his desire for some financial security. For most things I will just pirate it if it’s heavy handed about subscribing to their service, but if a couple dollars a month helps LJ continue to develop my favorite app I’m not complaining. It’s such a small amount of money anyway.

I’m not saying this to take away from your argument, I also see the validity in buying a license vs a subscription. I guess in my head I can make an exception for Sync, only because I’ve used it SO much over the years.

This is pretty much my sentiment for choosing to subscribe monthly to Sync as well. Sync for Reddit was one of the most polished, feature-rich, and customizable apps available for Android, and LJ Dawson is doing it by himself. I want to support him.

I’m not sure what he plans to make it cost, but out of curiosity, what would you consider a reasonable lifetime cost given the current sub cost?

I’d say about 5 bucks to remove ads and trackers permanently aka the Pro version.

For the Ultra idk, probably in the ballpark of 40 to 60 bucks.

How about 20? Yes, really. Removing ads is 20 fucking dollars.

For no ads I’m totally fine with 10-15 dollars since I’m not so enticed by the features currently. Even more is fine, supporting the dev is also important, just that I have more than enough subscriptions as is draining my bank.

I think I bought the “ultra” version of the sync app for Reddit at like 5.99 for a lifetime. 16.99 for a year is ridiculous even counting for inflation. 9.99 for life seems reasonable.

Right now sync is taking on the Spez mentality. I hope it changes. Will come back if it does.

I think ultra for reddit was always a subscription. Only the pro version had a one time fee and that version is likely coming to sync for Lemmy too.

Sync for Reddit Ultra had a lifetime option and IIRC it was about $30

Iirc annual subs are usually also cheaper because the devs don’t have to pay as many processing fees

Imagine paying monthly to have all your data collected anyway

He said that the permissions requirements are a consequence of the ad utility being used, and as far as I remember he doesn’t even have the library initialized that would collect the data. I don’t see any reason to think he’s being malicious.
