Does the choice to make the statue of the virus instead of the people strike anyone else as…odd?

In addition to the physical monument, a virtual Memory Garden on covidmemorialmonument.org allows donors to “plant a dandelion” — a yellow flower for a front-line worker and a white fluffy head for loved ones who’ve died. Donors can upload an image and text in honor of recipients. Submissions start at $20.

Get fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked. You should be making a list of fucking names and putting them on plaques at the very least if you’re gonna do a fucking statue of the virus instead of the people. Charging people for a fucking “virtual” memory garden give me a fucking break.

Orrrrrrrr, we take this as a challenge! A challenge to get as many stupid names into the garden as we can.

Then, when they show it off, it’s names like Erma Dummass.

They will be fine with it for as long as they can - since it is 20 bucks each time.

Then, one day they be like “oh we had to get rid of the stupid names insensitive people kept putting in”, clean those out, and keep the money anyway.

TL;DR: not that good of a way to stick it to them as it may sound at first.

Or the website will just disappear entirely when they decide to stop paying the server bill.

Ah yes, the “people don’t get paid enough and then die” memorial.

I mean we did still need power plants to function, gas to pump, and food to be available.

Absolutely. What we didn’t need to do was pay those people shit wages while they got harassed by people angry about having to wear a mask. But it’s okay, because signs were put up in front of supermarkets and hospitals calling them heroes and now there will be a memorial to them shaped like the thing that killed them since they were killed doing a necessary job that paid them fuck all.

Yeah. We cant know who was trying to use the hero label to manipulate workers into showing up and who meant it. I like to believe the praise was largely genuine. I think people actively working in risk of covid should have received more government checks rather than all businesses adopting indefinite hazard pay, if thats what you were getting at.

I do think the artist got caught up with the most visually interesting sculpture rather than a sculpture that conveys honor of the memory of those who died.
