President Donald Trump on February 21 fired the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and dismissed five other admirals and generals in an major shake-up of the top leadership of the U.S. military.

Trump’s fascist coup d’état appears to be progressing nicely (for the fascists that is).

Hitler only needed 53 days to secure absolute power after having been appointed chancellor. Trump is now 33 days into his second presidency.

    Top “generals,” plural I believe.

edit 1: just remembered different services use different ranks, the other confirmed fire was an admiral.

edit 2: Another general was indeed fired: Gen. James Slife

And they’re likely getting replaced with diehard loyalists. The Joint Chiefs is already going to a MAGA if I heard correctly.

Quoting Lenin: “There are decades where nothing happens and there are weeks where decades happen.”

And it’s starting to feel like there are days when centuries happen.

If Trump genuinely, fully wants to drive the United States into authoritarianism, forcefully installing diehard loyalists in the military is one of the most crucial early steps.

I rarely lean into conspiracy theories and we’re living in insanely complex times but this move has me genuinely worried. Hopefully, my fears turn out to be a figment of imagination.

I don’t think this counts as a conspiracy theory. What he is doing is right out of Project 2025 and it is exactly for the reason you are suggesting.

It’s not a conspiracy theory when they’re doing what they said they were going to do. Trump’s weak disavowal doesn’t really count since everyone he’s surrounded himself with was and still is an active proponent.

Why is the media not blaring the alarms?!

I mean, I know the answer–they’re owned by complicit parties.

But still… They have to see what’s happening. Being fired for speaking freely is not the worst thing in the world.

Why is the media not blaring the alarms?!

It’s front-page news in the New York Times right now. The Washington Post too.

That speaks to the historical purpose of journalism in the United States more than malice. When journalism doesn’t do that you get fox. Or the entire uk press.

Historically newspapers were not stolid registers of factual happenings. That’s a modern invention. The press was an essential venue for advocacy in the American Revolution and papers were where political viewpoints were expressed.

If you report a scandal as just facts because of some imagined role of journalists as simple archivists of events, the general public is unlikely to recognize it as a scandal.

The fact that we are entering a time when a coup in the USA is a legitimate threat is so utterly terrifying.

From at least Reagan to now diehard conservatives have laid the foundation for all of this over the course of decades and Mitch McConnell and many of the other conservatives now in dismay at this shift absolutely played a crucial role in making it all possible.

I’ve always wondered what people in Germany felt in the 1930s. Well, now I know. I’m not saying Trump/Republicans are literal nazis and authoritarianism is inevitable but the utter chaos unfolding is reminiscent.

DOOM Guy was ordered to fire on unarmed civilians and punched his commanding officer in the face. Pass it on.

The entire reason anybody is in the military is to defy the shit out of unlawful orders. Who holds the guns?
