President Donald Trump has signed an executive order declaring English as the official language of the United States, saying it will help ensure a "unified and cohesive society” in a nation that has long prided itself on being the “melting pot of the world.”

The move revokes a mandate from former President Bill Clinton that required government agencies and organizations that received federal funding to provide language assistance to non-English speakers.

    Ah, there it is.

Yup. Everyone will treat this like a silly, “wow so dumb and pointless” thing.

      It’s all quite calculated.

That’s even worse news in a way. I thought a big share of these “executive order” fest was showmanship and propaganda. I.e. they were made to be over-the-top, largely ineffective and eventually shot down by judges so they could help Trump advance his “Judges bad, me King” position while at the same time strengthening the air of constant rage and outrage that his supporters seem to thrive in and paralyzes his opposers.

The fact they are actually trying to do this evil shit, covertly, with no particular intent to “go viral” like a wannabe teenage influencer is somehow worse. Not that this one was particularly subtle so maybe it was still done to be found…

Yes. When they say the loud stuff is the distraction, you’re now seeing the slight of hand.

Legal aside it also empowers a certain “this is murica we talk english here” kind of person.

he tries so hard to be macho and gung ho, but he lacks the gravitas and instead comes off as a de facto prima donna. his modus operandi is faux pas ad nauseam - every day is like a blitzkrieg of déjà vu. we must declare him persona non grata en masse (via coup if necessary), so we can finally say adieu, ciao, sayonara, etc.

This “use executive orders to bluff until people treat them like actual laws” strategy is starting to get really annoying.

He is really nullifying the importance of what an executive order is. From Trump, these are just demands.

They’re not really even that, this is really just a mildly spicy press release.

As in what is this executive order actually intended to achieve? It’s a dog whistle designed to embolden idiots that say things like “we speak english in this country”.

Well this is true, he’s also illegally firing all of the people that make these things happen. This is basically the outcome of the God King status he has acquired for himself. It’s official business therefore not illegal even though it’s against the law.

Don’t cheapen it by making it sound less dangerous than it is…

The sooner everyone stops listening to him the better. “Yes Mr. President now eat your cheeseburger.”

But he is surrounded with an army of butt lickers. Let’s hope he fires them all like last administration, but that might take too long.

Why would he sign an executive order declaring a language he doesn’t speak as the official language of the US

how many times can you add the extra ‘u’, flip around ‘er/re’, or use a british term or slang no ‘real american’ would understand, before you’re obligated to have beans for breakfast?

Huh, I am not getting “unified and cohesive” vibes from this guy and his administration.

Oh, it’s the “aggressively stamp out anyone not like us” kind.

I lowkey wish this was a universe in which this was actually the case. Everything else in that universe, up to this EO, has been exactly the same and the only difference is that this EO makes Russian the official language of USA. I kinda just want to see how far backwards some would bend to explain the move.

Fake laws! Executive orders also say everyone in the US is female; one’s gender is now only determined by their body’s plumbing at conception 😂

Technically the order you’re referring to makes everyone either genderless, or both genders. It doesn’t make everyone female.
