Yesterday I came across a thread where people were asking about Discord alternatives and there it was - glorious Revolt which looks great. Now Iam wondering if we as a community could / should create an Revolut server where we can discuss stuff in real-time. Maybe even coordinate movement of European goods from one country to another - for example I’ve seen demand for a Kofola in next-door countries like Germany which could be easily faciliated. Also I could vice versa use import of products from other countries into small-shops where I know owners. What’s your thought ?
Most places on Lemmy will use Matrix as it’s federated unlike Revolt. There’s even a link to one for here in the sidebar (that I apparently wasn’t a part of before).
Why does it need to be federated? It’s European just as well.
Also, having tried Matrix: it’s terrible. The UI is really bad. Calls and Screenshare is not functional.
IMO matrix isn’t intended to be a Discord alternative, but UI wise there are lots of choices of app each with a different UI.
Because federation is a pre-emptive defense against corporate capture and enshittification.
Revolt may be open source but they are still a company that could sell out, at which point you have the enormous switching costs of trying to move communities to a fork or a new service. We’ve seen how well that goes with every other social media platform migration.
Good point. Even Mozilla is changing their ways these days.
I wish there was a software exactly like Discord but federated.
irc is. but sadly it misses all the modern stuff :(
Matrix seems better
Or XMPP.
Dunno why this isn’t widely used. I never managed to set up matrix properly, but XMPP was a breeze. Does XMPP allow servers, though?
It doesn’t have servers with a bunch of channels unfortunately, only group chats :(
Matrix is terrible as Discord alternative.
