Hi! I messed up my username at signup and its be bothering me a long time now. I would like my username to be SmokeyDope instead of the current Smokeydope.

I don’t believe theres any way to change the username on my side. I can change how it displays locally on Voyager but thats not really the same thing.

Is there anything that can be done about this easily on the admin side? Its not a big deal and im worried it could require resetting my post and comment numbers.

Smokeydope is your username. That can’t be changed due to how federation works. But your display name is SmokeyDope. Display names can be changed to anything as much as you want.

thanks for the reply blaze. It seems changing display name did more than I thought. However on my voyager app and on the URL to my Lemmy page it still shows Smokeydope

Your account name cannot change, but you can make your display name whatever you want. Though various apps/UIs may only show one or the other. My app shows “Smokeydope” as the author of this post, but shows “SmokeyDope” when viewing your profile.

What would happen hypothetically if one were to alter the capitalization in the database? Is activitypub case sensitive or would it be treated the same by other servers?

That’s good to know, it makes sense that they wouldn’t be. Does this mean that @[email protected]’s Name capitalization could be changed? It wouldn’t affect the other servers who already know him but it would make all new servers who learn of him have the correct capitalization.

I will add the caveat that I would be very hesitant to try it without some careful research, and testing it on a dummy account. You never know what might break.

Makes sense, it’s one thing to do it in theory, another to do it in practice.
