As much as I love the Raspberey Pi, I really wish every company didn’t make it the goal to shoehorn them into places they don’t belong. This could have just been a static image. Don’t even really need a light behind it.

There’s a tiny camera in there, doing facial scans and building a biometric database for the eventual rollout of that famous 4chan greentext where you have to slam a mountain dew to play video games.

I kinda doubt these are pis. Maybe pi zeros. But more likely they are one of the myriad of off the shelf Atmel or similar embedded SOCs. Like the kind you find in a Roku.

In many cases a raspberry pi could be cheaper here.

Cheaper than plastic screen printed static images? God I hope not.

I meant compared to other digital solutions.

Keep in mind that for printed images you would still need a quality printer with ink and decent paper. Your average printer and paper would probably not have the quality you’d want. Plus there’s many other reasons to have something digital, such as an easy way to remotely update thousands of images because they changed a bit of the branding, graying out the image of a drink because it is not available, and most importantly you already need a processing unit for the rest of the stuff the machine does that would otherwise require custom printed PCBs.

So as I said, in many cases it will be cheaper.

Chain stores regularly get updated signage. This particular graphic would fit in an envelope. It’s neither complicated nor unusual.
