Has anyone used these?
I deleted my IG account last year and now I’ve been thinking of making one of these two my “main” platform, mainly as a way to show people IRL my photos and keep in touch rather than gather a following. I’m a hobbyist so finding clients is not a concern. Pixelfed is fediverse so that’s nice but Cara doesn’t allow AI which is also nice.
I made an account on both but have yet to invest a lot of time on either. I was wondering what people thought of these. Are people using them? How active is the community? Etc.
I’m on pixelfed, but I could stand to post more. I think I just need more time outside with my camera.
I’ve been on PixelFed for a couple of years but was not on Insta before that. It works just fine for my amatuer photo sharing. I get a few comments and “likes” / “shares” every so often, but it’s not a big crowd. Whatever you get from it would be mostly about what you put into it, IMO. PF is decentralized and part of the fediverse too, so that’s a big plus in my book. If you tag your PF posts with hashtags, they will be seen by everyone on Mastodon, etc… following those tags. And people on other services can follow you too.
I had not heard of Cara till this post. I just glanced at it and it seems fine, though it is more populated with painters and drawers than photographers, and Cara is centralized, of course.
I would suggest you give PixelFed a try and see if you can make it work, eh.
Sorry this is a bit of a non-answer, but I think carry on as you are - post the same stuff on both for a while. It’ll probably become apparent which one is more useful to you and whatever you need out of it.
I’d not heard of Cara before, so thanks for the heads up on that :)
You, as a photographer, will be in good company on PF. However, there’s other stuff, including AI slop and furry porn, too.
Use the block and the follow buttons.
I don’t really use any of them heavily, but word on the street is that vernissage is the one that’s best for serious photographers. I hope that helps, rather than just muddying the waters further.
