Mod Note : T’was a nice april fool matey !
I don’t do drugs though.
Factorio costs about $20 and One Thousand Hours of your life.
Thousand hours, on the first run.
Yeah its the time cost I dont want to pay…
It’s still funny to me the one time @[email protected] / @[email protected] bought a game, got disappointed, then proceeded to spend time milking it dry to get his money’s worth/points rewards.
Man, fuck Dragon’s Dogma 2!
Lol tell the story again
Yeah, just suffering to get his moneys worth I guess. :)
I thought it was $35?
Idk what the price is in I.C.E. eagle hot dogs, be glad I didn’t just put the price in pesos
Hey I laughed
Depends on which dollar we’re talking about. Zimbabwean?
The true cost of the game is much higher though.
My one year sober badge, to be more specific.
…here we go again.
This is a special kind of evil

“Made with anger” 😄
I don’t do computer games. Could you explain me what is the deal with this discounted game?
The developer is ideologically against sales, because they believe it’s disrespectful to people who have already bought the game. Factorio has never been on sale, and will (probably) never go on sale
Oh, that sounds principled
I could have sworn it went on sale exactly once specifically to raise funds for something, but I can’t remember what. I assume for Ukraine, but I’m not seeing anything in their steamdb price change history, anything from their website, or any talk about a one time sale.
This was the best April fools prank I’ve seen today
Doesn’t show as on sale for me. Maybe region specific?
Edit: Oh screw you!
I was about to say, Factorio is known for never being on sale, wow, what a day… A day… Huh. What day is it. Dangit.
same here, no sale in Canada
PS: D’uh… fell for it
Is this only in the EU? On my end in the US, it’s still full price.
Edit: My dumbass forgot it was April Fool’s Day. Ignore this comment.
check todays date.
Damn, I’ve gotten to a point in my life that I forget that April Fool’s Day exist.
It’s not the point in your life, it’s just the world we currently live in. Every day could be April Fools as far as I can tell.
lol
lmao, even
I was upset for a second that I finally bought it a month ago 😅
Developers or publisher seem to think its anti consumer practice to go on sale. So I knew something was off when I read post title.
It isn’t about visibility or sales, its about respecting the players who have already purchased the game. We don’t want to reward the people who hold off on buying the game, the game is a price we find reasonable, and this is the deal. If you think it is priced too high, then it is your choice to not purchase, and we hope that with enough time, and extra development, we will be able to convince you of its value.
Not having a sale ever is part of our philosophy. In short term, they are good and bring extra money, but we are targeting long term. I believe that searching for sales is wasted time, and people should decide on the price and value, but putting option of wasting time to search for deals or waiting seems like bad part of the equation. As an example I would like to mention Minecraft. I’m not aware of any sale of it :)
I used to respect that, same with them pricing the game at 20€ (not 19,99€, exactly 20€)… until they decided to increase the price over time to “adjust” it for inflation, instead of decreasing it like it is/used to be common practice, and then releasing a dlc that cost as much as the entire game, effectively doubling the price. 20€ was a fine price, give me a 10€ dlc on top of that and I’m still on board. But 64€ for the game and DLC? AAA price for no AAA value? Yeah, I’m out.
No AAA value? It’s up there with Minecraft and terraria as one of the best games.
I’d say it’s better than any AAA if you consider the games above “indie”
But Minecraft and Terraria do not cost 32€, do not have a DLC costing as much as the basegame and gave us what,15 years of free Content updates? So this is not even close to a fair comparison, if anything, this further proves my point that Factorio is overpriced
That was not the point. The point is that Factorio is in a similar level of quality. That is the top one. If you believe that 3X€ is too expensive for a top game, then you are saying that every game out there that is >30€ is overpriced.
If you believe that, you are honestly way out of touch with reality. 30€ is on the low side of a price for a game. Most AAA games are >60€.
But Factorio has just good gameplay. No hyperrealistic graphics, beautiful reflections, high quality sounds and smooth, detailed animations, which is what makes AAA so expensive. Even Satisfactory, which delivers simlar gameplay with, while not at AAA, at least at AA level, costs 40€, and that looks, sounds and feels amazing. There I can at least see why they charge that price.
Factorio does have high quality graphics, sounds an animations. It is just in 2D instead of 3D.
But if you price a product based on its cost instead of its value, you do you.
I prefer to pay 30k€ for a car than pay 60k€ for a worse car that happens to have a steering wheel made out of solid gold.
There’s some key details to not forget.
Factorio essentially kickstarted the genre. Satisfactory was inspired by it. I totally dig what Satisfactory has done but having a blueprint that is proven to work is skipping a lot of risk.
There is an inherent tradeoff between graphics and gameplay. Both have good reasons to focus on. Factorio has optimized it’s graphics and logic to an insane degree. Far beyond what is typically expected of an AAA game. You just don’t see that directly, since it provides value by absence. The game doesn’t even start to slow down until you are hundreds or thousands of hours in.
There is a reason AAA games frequently run badly even on top tier hardware, it’s because they prioritize graphical fidelity over all else. Optimization is often an afterthought, since programmers are expensive, and optimization doesn’t provide the immediately apparent value that graphics or new features do. Factorio had to take that risk though, because the game would not be fun if it couldn’t scale past the first ten hours.
Highly detailed graphics are very skillfully produced as well, but it’s a misunderstanding that a game’s code cannot be of similar quality and depth. A sort of graphical AAA vs functional AAA. Factorio took a lot of highly skilled programmers to pull off, while a graphically intensive game put those resources into their artists.
Factorio has more value than the vast majority of AAA games I’ve played.
I’m not saying it is a bad game, but it is not a 64€ game
Its worth it. People spend thousands of hours in it.
If they would price games based on the average amount of hours players spent in them, you would see this at 40 dollars probably…
And counterstrike would be 60 dollar or more…
Everyone I’ve played with above maybe 15k premier rating owns a knife, so, in a sense, CS costs much more than $60…
Hours played is the stupidest metic ever. Idc if most people disagree, content bloat is nothing worth paying more for, a high quality but short experience is way more worth to me. Games should respect my limited lifetime.
No AAA value? Rude. It has AAA value to me.
It has far more than AAA value to me. AAA games are mostly boring imho.
i mean the dlc easily quadruples the length of the game, soooooo
If you think it is priced too high, then it is your choice to not purchase, and we hope that with enough time, and extra development, we will be able to convince you of its value.
No. It just convinces me to pirate.
As someone who actively sails the high seas, the devs and publisher of Factorio don’t really hit any of the marks for why I would pirate something in the first place.
See, this is a toxic attitude to promulgate. They are not charging an outrageous price. It’s not a subscription. It’s not an unfinished game. It’s not locked to the Epic Games store. It’s being actively maintained. It’s not being sold by a toxic publisher like EA. It’s an indie developer. Etc. etc.
It’s just a simple product, with a simple price. And you insist you have the right to obtain a copy of it without paying because they don’t offer discounts. This just isn’t reasonable. You don’t have a right to a copy of this game. It’s entertainment. It’s a product that those who work on it derive their lively hood from. It’s not food. It’s not shelter. It’s not healthcare.
Don’t worry, I’m sure this paragon of wisdom would come up with another excuse of why they would pirate the game even if it did have a discount.
Yeah, “I’m cheap/broke” is a reason to pirate, but so many people shy away from admitting it. Simply because they feel the need to morally justify it in some other way. I guess because saying “I took this shit for free. I could pay for it but I don’t wanna” doesn’t feel good.
I liked the demo, too. Bought the game after playing the demo
That falls into the “not purchase” category. Regardless, their point still stands. If it’s not worth it for you at that price and you still want to play it, you might as well pirate it now because the price isn’t changing.
Honestly its one of those games where I recommend people pirate and if you like it or feel like you got a lot out of it and think they do deserve it, pay for it.
I recommend everyone pirate every game to try it, and if you feel that it is worth the asking price then pay that,or donate more. I was playing factorio for probably 7 years before i bought it because i couldnt afford the game. That being said I did buy it, because it is a game that I have installed on multiple computers over the years. If I have to redownload your game launcher, I typically just buy it now. Before companies start trying to take advantage of this, if I have to uninstall your launcher because of a bug or enshittification the chances of me ever playing your gake again go down dramatically, damn near zero unless you gather cultural relevance for a decade.
There are so many games that I don’t even feel the need to pirate. There are plenty of games on my wishlist that either currently are or will be on sale so I’d rather just buy one of those. And with piracy I already archived full collections for various older systems, there are probably hundreds of S tier games that I’ve never played that are just waiting for me. No more downloads, no more payments, no accounts. I could fuck off for years and just play emulated games.
Yeah, they answered that: “with enough time”, they hope they can convince you to buy it.
One area where Factorio is tough to pirate is, they actually locked their mods behind a sort of DRM scheme where you have to confirm having it on Steam to download them. It’s a great game as just vanilla but I’m not sure how to get around that if you want to use mods.
Worth noting is that you can also get factorio DRM-free on the website, and then downloading mods is locked behind logging in with your account - same as playing multiplayer on online-mode servers. But mods are also just zip files that you can also download from the website (still need to log in and own the game), so same as games with steam workshop, people will share mods same as they share game files.
If that’s too inconvenient for you to pirate, well, “piracy is a service issue” ;)
Yeah I have no idea where if anywhere people share pirated mods, definitely would like to know, haven’t seen them on torrent sites. Beat Saber has something like this also with a different system (where somehow third party mod managers have ended up implementing this sort of check), and steam workshop as you mention. Anyway I do own Factorio (though not the expansion), it’s mostly just something that seems like a relevant factor.
You nasty piece of 🤬 …well played, good sir, well played.
Imagine if the dev actually did this. They’d probably make millions just from those that added it to their wishlist hoping it’ll go on sale someday and completely forgot about it. I know because I was one if those dudes but eventually caved after I found out it’ll never go on sale.
I have fifty steam accounts that own one copy of Factorio each and I’m just waiting to cash in.
I thought I was ruined at first.
?
Sorry bud either you understand investing or you don’t.
But who would buy an entire steam account just for factorio at the normal price, you could just buy it now on the steam store
You bring a rationality that is not appreciated in investing circles!
(The OP is known for joking 90% of the time, if you read their account name, just disregard the opinion and assume the opposite)
I had it in my wishlist for years. I wasn’t exactly waiting for a discount, I was just playing other games. I finally bought it a month ago and already spent more than 100 hours. The game is addictive.
I was as well. Put off buying it for years, as I am the patient gamer who waits for deals. I caved after playing Satisfactory and still having the itch to build factories
They have a demo available for free, which was enough to let me know I’m too dumb for the game.
If I have to think a lot to play the game then I’m out. I get paid for that shit.
In my opinion you really don’t have to think to do quite a bit of stuff and enjoy yourself in Factorio. I think if you want to think about what you’re doing you can figure out ratios, making nice blueprints, building circuits, and all sorts but I have a few friends who had hundreds of hours of fun in the game never once considering anything like “what would I need to get a full blue belt of green science?”
The anti-thinking approach would be “I need red science to get this tech, so I’ll set up machines for red science”, “my iron gears going into red science aren’t keeping up so I’ll build more iron gear assemblers”, “my copper going into red science isn’t keeping up so I’ll build more furnaces”, “I have more red science than my labs can use so I’ll build more labs”, etc.
Personally, I don’t mind seeing the exact production numbers and doing a little math to figure out exact numbers of assemblers necessary, but it’s just as valid to build more X assemblers until the X belt is full, then when X’s ingredients start to run out you can repeat that process for its ingredients.
That’s me, still haven’t bought it. I got other games to play anyway so oh well!
That’s really funny but also fuck you
maybe it’s a cultural thing, but this isn’t funny in my region
Maybe not but your comment fucking was lmao
Trust me, the laughter comes from a place of pain 🥲

ah well now i get it
Just curiosity, which region on the globe is that?
the one where we don’t have fun
Sooo, the end is near?
Edit: OH COME ON
Mods, send this man back to the Reddit he came from
I have no problem admitting that, it is indeed a repost from Reddit. But it’s also the only April fools that I found genuinly funny, and since I didn’t see it here I wanted to spread the joy :D
I thought about creditting it, but that’d kind of ruin the joke, plus I don’t really care about creditting Reddit anyway.
Sarcasm: As a former Reddittor, you are in every right to not credit.
Truth: Real. Peace to you today bro.
