From Audubon Center for Birds of Prey

Our social media coordinator is on vacation and left Gopher the Burrowing Owl in charge.

Did you know? While Burrowing Owls typically use burrows created by prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and even tortoises, the Florida population usually digs their own burrows! These burrows can be six to 10 feet long and sometimes lined with cow manure. It’s hard work for little owls!

This species is State-designated Threatened here in Florida, owing primarily to habitat loss. They need open prairies with little ground vegetation, which includes golf courses, airports, vacant lots, agricultural land, and sometimes even front yards!

Of course they are! Who else would build landing strips for gay martians?

I like you, bhamlin, you’re not like the other people in this trailer park.

I never burrow any owls. I live within my memes. But if more people start burrowing more owls and don’t plan for their retirement, this could spell “disaster”. It could, if you spell it. Spell it!

How would an owl dig? With claws or beak? They do not look like they are built for digging at all.

      Burrowing Owl

I have heard so much back and forth about if they dig or not. Florida’s Burrowing Owls do have some different genetics than those in the rest of North America, so it may be that, or maybe just the soil in some parts of Florida allows it where it doesn’t in other places. Owls seem to be mostly squatters as a whole, so they’d probably rather not dig if they don’t have to.
