Let people enjoy things for fucks sake. Can’t enjoy anything these days without some jerk online trying to make you feel bad.
Fuck 'em
I hate sony now, but consoles have their place in gaming. If the companies didn’t fuck you over, that place would be even bigger because the convenience factor alone is a huge plus.
But don’t conflate shitty corporate behavior with the underlying concept. The ps5 is a great console. It’s just not really your console the way it should be because of sony
Just use the Linux console and you’re fine.
Well atleast its possible now to install Linux on a PS5
I’m probably going to regret asking, but curiosity is getting the better of me.
What has the PS5 done to draw the ire of the fediverse?
A subscription is needed for multiplayer.
No mods.
Locked down os.
No system configuration
No drivers to mess with
No DRM eating system resources
Significantly cheaper (you can get a whole PS5 for the cost of a similarly performing GPU alone, thanks AI!)
Even playing field for all players, no competitive advantage for having better hardware
Can’t speak for the multiplayer subscription, but the latter two have pretty much always been the case, no?
(Sits on stump, sets my belt onion off to the side, tells the young’uns to gather round to listen to an old man speak): Back when I gamed, I had to pay for Xbox Live to play multiplayer.
I guess just because it has always been like that doesn’t make it good.
Personally, I think if they allowed installing whichever system you want on the machine you own, it would be leaps ahead. In fact the first xbox I think allowed installing Windows, and they teased Linux in the PS3, but later rolled back? People did it but I don’t remember if it ever became anything official.
Pay for multiplayer, well it’s justifiable but definitely not for the price they charge, which is why they include all the “other perks”.
In any case, if you own a console, enjoy it!
OG Xbox didn’t allow anything like that, but there was an active mod scene. Once it got to the point you could soft mod it without having to install a modchip, it was like a whole new system. Kodi started life as Xbox Media Center running on the OG Xbox. Was so awesome and that was my media center for years.
Yeah, the PS3 “Other OS” debacle was a real dirty move by Sony, I’ll agree. There was no reason to take away existing functionality but they did it anyway.
I’m assuming you mean for internet multi not local? That’s been a thing tried since remote gaming became viable, some worked some failed, some just built things where lan parties became a thing and told the users to figure it out themselves.
Consoles from the dawn of time have had locked OS and no mods (unless you count things like the game genie/shark systems) so that’s nothing new either.
I’ll stick mostly to PC myself, but those things aren’t unique to the PS5.
Fair, I’d hate it too. This is how I feel about Switch 2s even more so honestly.
in addition to all of that theyre reporting GrapheneOS users to feds for using GrapheneOS https://thecybersecguru.com/news/yoti-grapheneos-sony-playstation-age-verification/
issue is that a ps5 is much cheaper than a computer that can play the same games.
so I find the argument a bit classisist.
yhea, a machine you own and control is better, yes gaming in a pc is better. but that’s like saying “Why people use more affordable thing that comes with a lot of issues instead of the much more expensive thing?”
Damn classisists casting shade on anything from the last 1500 years!
a pc can do much more than play games though
You can watch porn on a PS5 though
im ace though
You’re certainly not short of self confidence!
But most people do not need a gaming PC to for most stuff other stuff.
but if you want to do those things, you could use a gaming PC, while if you have a PS5, you would need a second device
but they can also get a 300$ laptop and do most of those things,
at that point, are you sure its cheaper than to just buy a device worth the total?
Not even close.
Gaming is a hobby, computer is for productivity.
getting a computer for basic productivity is about 300$, getting a gaming computer is about 1000$ and can easily balloon to three times that much. and a PS5 is about 600$
IE getting a machine that can do both is not that different price wise to getting a PS5 + low end laptop. a quality PC starts at that price.
If you dont have a big interest in gaming, then there’s no point at getting a gaming PC. and cost wise. it is a bit classisist to look down at console gamers
I have a gaming PC, and I get it, but the elitism online of “I am better because I am not a console casual” is BS
from the fediverse, i would expect the ps5 hate to come from the system being locked down, not your stated reason
By your math, getting the gaming PC only takes $100 more for hardware.
You forgot a very important part of the overall costs: software. PSN is >$100 per year, and games bought on their store tend to be more expensive due to the closed ecosystem. Insisting on buying a PS5 “because it’s cheaper” is like buying small packages of non-perishable items at the grocery store. It ends up costing more in the long run., because corporations like to set up systems where it’s more expensive to be poor.
And there’s the risk of not being able to carry over your purchases if upgrading to a PS6 in a few years. Sony already has a track record of fucking over customers. For example, when people lost access to their purchased Discovery shows like Mythbusters when the Sony/WB deal expired.
Also, a $300 Chromebook is barely more than e-waste. Buying a bluetooth keyboard for your smartphone is usually a better investment.
And one more thing, all of these comparisons between console and PC and making up cases of people not having money always focus on cost of new hardware. Used hardware exists, especially for PCs. It’s fairly easy to fix up an old PC or built one from a mix of components. I grew up poor, and in that situation you don’t go around buying new stuff, you buy used items and hand-me-downs.
A comparable PC costs roughly 1 to 2x a PS5, but in the long run the PC is cheaper when you factor in the costs of games and subscriptions .
Plus it’s a PC, with 100s of applications beyond just gaming and streaming. And there’s 100,000 + PC games vs ~1100 PS5 games.
It’s modular and upgradeable. So in 5 to 7 years, you can upgrade it instead of buying a whole new console.
The only real advantage consoles have are the cheaper upfront costs.
Ok Darius. Investments aren’t for broke people.
If you’re saving up for a gaming system, you’re already thinking ahead. Far better to get the thing that costs less.
Also, you know what actual broke people do? They don’t buy stuff new
One might think that people who buy cheap gear have a choice between buying cheap gear now and newer cheap gear in a few years or spending the same amount of money on more expensive gear that they won’t have to replace that quickly. This simply isn’t true.
I spend a lot of time in virtual worlds, also reading about virtual worlds. Second Life requires hardware with at least some oomph nowadays. However, there are Second Life users with 15-year-old bottom-of-the-line consumer notebooks. The stuff that supermarkets used to sell from pallets. 2 or 4GB of system RAM (you need this much as VRAM nowadays), on-board graphics etc. They’ve probably bought it used, but still quite a while ago.
Why are they still using that old clunker? Because they’ve never been able to acquire any other more powerful computer ever since.
I think it’s even worse in OpenSim where those end up who can’t even afford Second Life.
in the long run
That’s the classist part of the argument. Being able to afford higher upfront costs for the sake of a long-term investment is often what sets classes apart. Premium products, in general, tend to be cheaper in the long run (see: printers, shoes, clothes, houses, etc.)
This sounds more like a dig against Sony by targeting a vulnerable demographic for rent extraction.
Also, it’s easy to build a cheap PC from used parts
You can play tons of good games on a PC that is cheaper up-front than a Playstation 5. Get a second-hand 720p or 1080p monitor for $30. Spend 1 day to build a $470 PC (logical increments has a good parts list and it’s easier than legos). Install Linux. Start pirating.
Even if you count that day as $200 in lost opportunities (in which case you would logically be making at least $6000 after taxes per month, or over $100k per year before taxes), that still means it’s cheaper upfront to have a PC with hundreds of games than a PS5 with one (1) game.
You can play plenty of good games on a $90 used office pc as well. To make a fair comparison you’d have to think of a PC that’s as powerful as a PS5
Or you can get a console that plays 4k games at 60fps for the same money. Also not everyone is smart enough or willing to break the law pirating video games.
So now you’re casually dropping $500 extra on a 4K monitor? For that kind of cash, get a $720 PC and a $280 1440p monitor. It’s not 4K, but it’s 60 fps, and that’s honestly way more important. You can also play with keyboard and mouse so you can actually aim.
And okay, fine, maybe you don’t want to break the law. In that case, go play any of the thousands of excellent indie or 5+ year old PC games that cost less than $10 on sale. You’re still much better off than buying console games.
Also ton of free epic and steam games
plays 4k games
With upscaling. Guess what every graphics card built in the last 5-10 years has been capable of?
Don’t forget size factor, ease of placement, etc. Even mini PCs tend not to be designed with placement near a big TV in mind. Consoles are by default
Most people can only afford to consider upfront costs
If they can afford a PS5, they can afford used parts to build a PC.
Sony tries to lock people into their ecosystem so they can continually upcharge them with PSN and increased game prices.
Not being aware of the reality of the Vimes Boots Theory of Economics?
Believe it or not, class privilege.
If they can afford a ps5 now. They can afford a pc later. Otherwise they couldnt afford the ps5 to begin with.
So I find thr argument a bit classist.
yarrrr 🏴☠️
you wouldn’t download a ps5
