TLDR: it works. But if you need to cover 24h in a day (care, hospital, etc) you will need more people.
But: most jobs don’t have to cover 24h.
I firmly believe that most office jobs could be done in 6 hours/day with no noticable difference in productivity. Stagger the hours between workers to fill up the required hours if necessary. Let morning people start earlier and let me sleep.
Last time I worked in an office, I was there 8,75 hours a day, 0,75 hours were break, I was out on a smoke break for another hour (in total) and chatting with coworkers in the kitchen for another two. Still managed to get everything done and had some idle time where I researched stuff or ran tests etc.
Meanwhile german chancelor wants everyone to work more hours to solve a worker shortness that doesnt exist amidst an AI driven labor shortage…
