Eight years ago I asked this question and I was told to get a ClipperCreek, and I bought one and I never worried about it for eight years until it just broke. Apparently the contactor went bad and it does not look easy to repair.

Ao I went to buy another Clippercreek, only to find that they appear not to sell lower amperage chargers any more. And I don’t recognize any of the other brands I can find.

So, nowadays, what is a good reliable brand for a 24A (for plugging into a 30A receptacle) level 2 evse ?

    I use a Grizzl-e Mini personally. Comes with adapters for every relevant type of plug in North America, and can be configured via both dip switches and software, so you can always be certain it will draw the right amperage.

    Let’s go back a step, because I think there’s a different question behind the question. Most can be configured for lower amperage, the question is why you want to.

    What receptacle are you trying to connect it to?

        Someone already mentioned Grizzl-E, there’s the DeWalt 32A portable (with 14-30 cord), and more. You could get the GM dual voltage portable, and order a 14-30 connector. There’s even a number of old Clipper Creek units on eBay, for about what you’d spend on a new charger.

        You can find simple adapters to 14-30 from the common NEMA 14-50. Many level 2 EVSE models can configure a current limit. The details may be buried in the user manual, though. It could be in the built-in UI, an app on your phone, or old school DIP switches. Grizzl-E has DIP, Emporia (at least the load management version) has an app.

        Alternatively, you could replace the 14-50 plug with a 14-30, or hardwire it. It should just require a wire stripper and wire nuts.

        Finally, and this is one that may require professional guidance, check the specs behind the 14-30R. It may have been chosen because that matched the dryer, and could be easily upgraded to 14-50R. But don’t attempt this unless you know what you’re doing, and you have enough data to know if it’s the right move, and all of the pieces are up to spec. This includes knowing the wire gauge, length, and entire path.
