How can I convince my insurance that the French removal surgery is needed?

My dad had this surgery in the late 90s. Hopefully it’s better by now because, yeah, yikes is right.

I remember him spraying antiseptic in his mouth for a few weeks after it was over and almost screaming at the pain every time. It must have been a requirement because there’s no way anyone would volunteer for that kind of pain.

The real kick in the teeth was that it didn’t actually help either… He still snored like crazy and the restless leg syndrome (although now I think it’s called periodic limb movement disorder) was unchanged.

Holy crap that’s horrifying. And it didn’t work, what the F.

        Sorry to hear that.

Oh geez I just looked it up and the recommended surgeries are lasering off your uvula, parts of your tongue or soft palate.

Oh get out of here, those cannot be the healthiest solutions.

Funnily enough, it’s what i have been considering for a month now. I don’t wanna snore and I’m ready to call up a doctor over it.

Best o luck. Have you exhausted all nonsurgical options already?

If you’re set on surgical, it looks like rather than removing tissue in the hopes of removing obstruction, they can implant pieces of plastic that will encourage the growth of scar tissue that reinforces the structure of the soft palate so that it doesn’t collapse and cause snoring.)

I wouldn’t start taking things out of my body unless there was no other option.

Haven’t snored since I started using CPAP.

I’d imagine it’s a reclassification of symptoms so that treatments can be better targeted… Not because it hurts someone’s feelings… That’s dumb.

There are a lot of uvular consonants, not just those French “r” sounds. Here’s the wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uvular_consonant .

Your uvula is that punching bag like thingy in the back of your throat. Sounds made at or near that are called uvular.

Seems odd to me that removing someone’s uvula would cure sleep apnea. I would think it would not be so easy. Of course we don’t have the whole story here, right?

Weird. I can finally weigh in on something.

It’s not exceptionally common, but for some individuals the uvula is big enough or shaped well enough, or the throat small enough, or the opening of the throat after the tongue relaxes becomes small enough, that the uvula can lay over it, and contribute to obstructive sleep apnea!

There are likely other factors, but removing the uvula is just one of the many corrective actions available for surgery to improve sleep apnea!

I guess everything, including life itself, can be surgically removed.

My mother has a pace maker for her tongue against sleep apnea, works like a charm apparently.

Thank fuck the Fr*nch were not effective colonizers.

I’d rather speak the weird amalgamation of 11 different languages, generally known as English.
