Wow but they got 83 votes? I wonder if it was all from countries that they supply grain or energy to?

    That’s a lot of votes.

Russia has a lot of credibility with countries that hate the West. Enemy of my enemy and so on.

Every country willing to put in the work belongs there.

Everyone is flawed, country’s included. We can keep each other in check, just like in any social dynamic. Those who willingly and purposefully break the rules though, there is a special place for those.

And it’s not on that table.

What? We can’t even get decent sentences for lads with hundreds of convictions this is either an outlier or there are other circumstances.

Also hardly a human rights violation worthy of comparison to the current members of the HR Council.

        Really?

I mean there was plenty of bombing of civilians for a while…

Yes and we are still seeking justice from the British government, but the Irish government has not bombed any civilians.

Oh no a bunch of piss bathing english got car bombed by a paramilitary organization. Good.

The only thing the IRA did wrong is not killing Thatcher and more government officials.

The IRA is not a government organisation. The argument is flawed, you wouldn’t leave Japan out of a global conference because the Yakuza is there. Or Italy and the Mafia.

The ethnic Tibetan. They’re effectively not allowed to own property. It also sounds like there’s a cultural genocide going on

The optimist in me thinks those 83 want them to have a seat so they can keep conversation open and help them be more self aware on what they are doing

This is the best summary I could come up with:

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Russia was defeated in its bid to regain a seat in the U.N.’s premiere human rights body by a significant majority in Tuesday’s election in the General Assembly, which voted last year to suspend Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine.

Russia was competing against Albania and Bulgaria for two seats on the Geneva-based Human Rights Council representing the East European regional group.

The only other competitive race was in the Latin America and Caribbean group where Cuba, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic defeated Peru for three seats.

Moscow’s U.N. ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, accused the United States on Monday of leading a campaign to prevent their return to the council.

Felice Gaer, director of the American Jewish Committee’s Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights, was among the non-government letter-writers also urging Russia’s defeat.

In last year’s election, Venezuela, South Korea and Afghanistan lost contested races, but countries including Vietnam and Sudan, which have been accused of having abysmal human rights records, won seats.
