I noticed that some instances put a registration wall behind their communities. If you are registered in instance A, you can search for a specific community in instance B but cannot see the full list of communities there. Is there a workaround (besides asking someone from B to give a list of the instance)?
You can use https://browse.feddit.de/ and instead of searching for a community, enter the instance (enter “lemmy.ml” for example) and then it should give you a list of all communities in that instance
Oh, they use the same instance A, instance B analogy I tried to cook up here. Glad it is already an ongoing issue!
Currently no, there’s no way, here’s the issue discussing about this
https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/2951You should be able to see the community list even when not logged in by visiting their instance and clicking Communities -> Local, unless they’ve somehow blocked that. (For instance, if I go to lemmy.ml and click Communities, I can see plenty of communities that don’t show up under the ‘All’ communities list on my local instance.)
How do I subscribe to those? Manually copy paste and edit link?
No need to even edit it; rightclick the community link -> Copy Link Address, then go back to your instance, click the search icon, and search for that full URL.
For example, I can go to your instance, click Communities, copy the first one ( https://lemmy.world/c/lemmyworld ), and search for that locally. One of the results is for the community as a whole. I can then click that search result, and I’m taken to that community via my instance, where I can subscribe.
It’d be nice to have a cleaner path, but it’s not too much of a hassle.
Also, note that once you subscribe, the community will show on your local Communities list (if ‘All’ is chosen) for everyone in your instance.
I haven’t noticed it. Can you provide an example?
Haha, you got me. Yeah, they are mostly the nsfw communities. But what is a man without his urges and what is an instance which can’t list its communities? It’s just weird.
Make sure your account has ‘show nsfw content’ turned on to view nsfw communities your instance knows about in the search.
Yeah, that is already turned on. That is part of what made me confused.
Too bad that’s the only thing being turned on as of now eheh
Which specific nsfw communities? So I can, you know, avoid them.
Mostly https://lemmynsfw.com There are some niche instances I saw thrown around but if you have a specific kink you have to look for yourself using the search feature. If you search for your kink and a community exists about it, it should show up.
Surely I’m not here to judge 👍
Can’t you just go to that instance and list the communities there? I don’t think you need an account to list the communities
Why can’t you go to instanceb.com/communities to see the community names? You don’t need to be logged in.
Instance A needs to be informed about each community on instance B (by searching for them in instance A) before they will list on instance A.
The only way i know of personally is go to the target instance and click "communities
There is https://browse.feddit.de/, but it doesn’t have everything (missing lemmy.ml for one). And showing every community on one instance would require unselecting every since other instance.
I haven’t found it necessary to register to see the list of communities on another instance. I just went to that instance in a browser and clicked on ‘communities’ to see the list.
It’s stupid but what I do now is just open the instance in a browser. Seems simple to implement as a view from your own instance, so I hope that happens.
This site lists them but in popularity order I believe.
