I consider the religiosity to be the cancer that validates this cruelty.
People were persecuted under the banner of Christian religion, by the Nazis. Settled land was then taken by those persecuted people under the banner of Jewish religion. People were subjugated and displaced under the banner of that religion. Some of those subjugated people formed a terrorist group under the banner of their Islamic religion. On and on.
Religion taken seriously is and always has been a cancer. Power is the reason for bloodshed, but religion creates the ultimate, unchallengable rationalization for it, and has through all human history.

A single life has more value than all your spooky scrolls and voodoo holy sites in all religions put together.
