If Biden really wants to sweeten this, he should propose improvements to the ACA, in addition to preserving what Republicans have thus far failed to kill. Start playing offense.

Get rid of the concept of deductibles, bring back that public option, allow year-round sign up, there are a lot of improvements that could be made. Unfortunately Democrats are not the party of solutions, they are a party of maintaining a status quo.

One party got Obamacare done and is responsible that 40 million Americans who otherwise wouldn’t have health insurance are covered by the Affordable Care Act.

The other side has sabotaged Obamacare in any kind of way possible, has blocked the Obamacare expansion to uninsured people in their own home states, has sued all the way up to the Supreme Court to eliminate Obamacare, has campaigned for 10 years against Obamacare, and came to within one single vote of eliminating Obamacare without any kind of replacement whatsoever.

And here you are, telling us how both parties are the same.

How many out of those years did Democrats have the White House, a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, and a majority in the House?

If your answer is “zero,” then you’re just admitting that the last time Democrats had a viable majority, they actually got shit done.

Why should Democrats want to permanently do away with the filibuster when they only ever had a razor thin majority and were facing an opposition hellbent on destroying the entirety of the Affordable Care Act and leaving 40 million Americans without health insurance?

Last time voters gave Democrats a significant enough majority, they got the Affordable Care Act. If voters want Democrats to act decisively, all they need to do is give them a decisive majority.

Voting for Republicans and then whining that Democrats get nothing done isn’t going to achieve anything.

Trump will do what he did last time. Claim to have a Healthcare plan. Point to an enormous pile of blank paper saying it’s his Healthcare plan or something. And continue to have absolutely no plan and make no progress. Followers will irrationally feel like things are improving even though nothing has changed. Or actually gotten worse if they manage to get control of the house and senate and kill the affordable care act. Expect gains Biden made in his administration, like for the first time allowing Medicare to bargain with drug companies for better prices, to also be on the chopping block.

Oh, I get there was memes, but none have survived the passage of time in the same way. Thanks obama has survived.

It’s the sheer volume of trumps inadequacies. None stick in the same way as he’s as disposable as his memes. With high quantity, I’d expect some to rise to the challenge. None really did. None capture the moment or zeitgeist around him.

Perhaps referring to him and his administration as a dumpster fire did, but that was more language catching on than a meme.

    “Affordable” Care Act.

    Ha.

I need surgery. The list price is $40,000. The cash-up-front price through a hospital was $9500. The price for the same surgery through an ambulatory surgical clinic is $4700. I am offered insurance through my workplace. My monthly premiums would be $200, I would have an annual deductible of about $5000 before 20% coinsurance, and then an out of pocket maximum of $9500. My price through workplace insurance would be $11,900 (monthly premiums + out of pocket max). I can get a platinum plan on the Healthcare.gov that would cost me $750/mo in premiums–I don’t qualify for any subsidies because I can get shitty insurance through my workplace–that has an annual deductible of $750, and an out of pocket maximum of $1500. So the same surgery would be $10,500 for a full-price plan on the marketplace.

Short of a catastrophic accident or illness, insurance just isn’t affordable, and doesn’t make sense. Unless Biden can fix the system so that you can get subsidies on the marketplace even if you are eligible for insurance through your employer, it’s just not going to work. I would definitely pay $250-300/mo for a platinum plan, but I can’t afford $750/mo, and I can’t afford to pay both the premiums and the deductible for what I can get through my workplace.

The facist supports genocide more as well, don’t forget that. Best friends with Netanyahu. In fact, Trump explicitly endorsed Netanyahu in Israel’s elections. Trump also moved to recognize Israeli settlements as legal (decades of US precendent had treated these as Illegal under international law), moved the US embassy to Jerusalem against the wishes of Palestinians, and tons more.

Handy list: 100 times Trump supported Israel

We can’t be always stuck with this “the lesser of two evils” forever. We can’t always vote for the other person just because he is not a Republican, that’s just fucking bullshit. I need to vote for a person who actually has my best interest in mind. People still go bankrupt from medical bills. Still neck deep in student loans debt. Kids still can’t get free meals in school. Sorry mate, but as of this coming election, these are probably your choices. If you don’t vote, the only thing you’re doing is increasing the risk of the greater of two evils.

If you want better politicians to run for president (which is a very reasonable wish to have) you’re first going to have to vote them in at lower levels. The problem, to me, appears to be that those who make it to the top end up being bad choices for a lot of people. I attribute that to low voter turnout in lower level elections, which leads to decent politicians never making it to the point where they can run for top level offices.

I’m not going to shred on you for feeling apathetic, I can understand that. I’m just going to point out that when given the choice between two evils, you need to reflect on whether you think it’s right to not choose, even if that leads to the greater of the two coming to pass.

It’s not because he’s not a republican. If there was a republican who didn’t have horrific policies in literally every area maybe I would consider voting for them.

I’m tired of this “both sides” are the same crap that is obviously untrue for anyone who pays even the slightest bit of attention. No the democrats haven’t been perfect even though they have done a lot of good, but the republicans are actively working to hurt most people.

For your examples, which political party is trying to strip Healthcare coverage from more people? Which political party is trying to make it so half of all Americans can’t get any Healthcare coverage again by bringing back junk insurance and pre existing conditions? What political party refuses to expand Medicaid to cover more people out of pure spite when money is sitting there on the table for it? What policital party sued to stop student loan debt forgiveness? What political parry appointed the hack judges who decided Biden wasn’t allowed to forgive student debt even with multiple laws explicitly saying he can? What political party raised student loan interest rates in the past? What political party held the entire government and full faith and credit of the united states hostage rather than let nationwide free school lunch continue? (not to mention most democratic states immediately reinstated it on a state level)

So sure there are some legitimate criticisms, I think he could do more to pressure Israel, though finally he’s gotten the “pause” he wanted. But get out of here with this both sides are the same stuff. That’s not remotely true and never has been.

              • Because every election becomes even more polarized and more of an end game. I would love to have options too, but at this rate there won’t be a next time

You’re right. Everything you listed is accurate and needs to be fixed and won’t until we fix voting.

He did a lot with the ACA, but everyone ignored it.

        https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2022/10/26/biden-harris-administration-launches-window-shopping-affordable-health-care-marketplace.html

Also new this year, families who may not have previously been eligible for tax credits may now be eligible for financial assistance – for the first time ever – thanks to the Biden-Harris Administration. Earlier this month, the Administration finalized a rule which will help about 1 million Americans who are offered employer insurance either gain coverage or see their coverage become more affordable through the Marketplace. To take advantage of the new policy, families who have found employer insurance unaffordable in the past should look at new opportunities for savings on HealthCare.gov.

To help connect people to coverage, the Biden-Harris Administration also made the single largest investment ever in the Navigators program. The $98.9 million this year builds on the Administration’s quadrupling of Navigators last year, which helped contribute to the record- breaking 14.5 million people who signed up for 2022 health care coverage through the Marketplaces, including nearly 6 million people who newly gained coverage. This continuation of historic levels of funding will help Navigators continue their work informing consumers about the enhanced tax credits and coverage available on HealthCare.gov.

        Making insurance make more sense.

With standardized maximum out-of-pocket limitations, deductibles, and cost-sharing features, consumers will be able to more directly compare other important plan attributes, such as premiums, provider networks, prescription drug coverage, and quality ratings when choosing a plan.

        https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/07/07/fact-sheetpresident-biden-announces-new-actions-to-lower-health-care-costs-and-protect-consumers-from-scam-insurance-plans-and-junk-fees-as-part-of-bidenomics-push/>

Today, President Biden announced a series of new actions under a core pillar of his “Bidenomics” agenda to lower health care costs and crack down on surprise junk fees for American families and consumers. Since the beginning of his Administration, President Biden has passed historic legislation to lower health care costs for tens of millions of Americans, took on Big Pharma to finally allow Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices, and took action to eliminate hidden fees in every sector of the economy. Today, the Administration is taking additional steps to continue to deliver on those promises.

But Biden hasn’t single handedly created fully socialized healthcare for every person so nothing else matters. Perfection or fail.

I didn’t say he’s done nothing, and I’m not expecting something he didn’t run on.

I asked for a source that he promised the public option. Someone else provided that source. I’m not seeing anything about a public option in any of your links. I haven’t seen any evidence that he tried to get the public option at all.

But It’s nice to know that I can always count on any criticism of Biden to be met with immediate strawman arguments.
