After a month of outrage, protests, and unrest from the community, Reddit has finally flipped the switch to shut down some third-party apps, including Apollo, Sync, and BaconReader.
Given all the antics by the company and the despicable behavior by spez and his henchmen, my position on reddit has gone from “I’ll use it much less now that my mobile app is gone and I only have desktop access” to “I will go out of my way to avoid providing value to the company even if it inconveniences me”.
I just spent the better part of 5 hours yesterday manually deleting all my top comments from reddit. They can revoke edits made by pushshift, but they won’t be able to figure out which manual edits to revoke. I used to give out technical advice on reddit and I used to get messages thanking me for posts I made years ago. Now all of those posts are gone.
Ditto. Went from kinda apathetic to full blown hate after all that muppet’s antics.
That is what we need to do, take what is ours, the content itself
There’s ways to automatically delete every post and comment you ever made, i forgot the sites name but someone built one

This is the one I used. It deletes everything. It also edits all your comments to whatever custom message you want. This means that if reddit attempts to revoke your comments they’ll get your custom edit instead of the original content.

If you’re not using Wefwef yet, give it a try. It’s basically an Apollo clone for Lemmy. Still pretty barebones but the dev is super active!
I found so many bugs. I am too new to lemmy and cant figure out which ‘subreddits’ to report wefwef issues.

The “he gets us” ad being targeted and spammed at vulnerable groups is sickening. I won’t support reddit allowing organizations to prey on people.

In consideration of how Reddit has been treating its users, “flipping the switch” on the API was, to me, like locking a door I had no intention to open again in the first place.

Hmm, that’s an interesting way to look at. It does seem to track that as interest rates went up so did enshittification. Too bad the reverse won’t be true if rates go back down, all the big players will probably double down on cashing out if they’re still around by then.

Moved my lemmy app to the place my reddit app used to sit for 12 years.
Lol, I just did the same thing when I found myself clicking my Reddit bookmark by muscle memory instead of Lemmy. The little things.
Same here. Had to make a point of deleting Boost and putting (for now at least) Connect For Lemmy in its place in my app folder. I’m done with Reddit - onwards and upwards with the fediverse!

Sync shut down right before I went out for the morning. Got back this arvo, sat down, immediately opened the app and had to just stare at a blank screen for a bit to let it sink in. And now I’m here lol.

Jerboa is borked for me right now so I’m using connect and I like it. Wefwef was pretty good (especially for a web app) but I think I like using connect more until Jerboa gets fixed or sync comes out.
Confirmed Slide no longer works either and unistalled it from my phone. So long reddit, it was fun (but utimately misguided of me to invest time/attention towards it).

Left yesterday as well, deleted Apollo off my phone and then immediately deleted my Reddit account.
I have been a user since the beginning almost and am sad to see its decline - especially so rapidly in the past few years.

There were a bunch of different ways Reddit could have handled the API changes (and the “profitability” standpoint). They seemed to choose exactly the wrong move.
Yeah it’s super weird. Either they did want to kill 3rd party apps and not admit it, and thought it would go down better than it did. Might have been okay if they didn’t go after the Apollo dev.
Or they really underestimated how much people would pay to use reddit/emotional investment for the 3rd party app devs. And genuinely thought some apps would do it within 1 month.
I guess the former, but like just admit it rather than bullshit people. At least then you would get some respect for honesty

We all know how shitty it was for Reddit to close the API, but had anyone else noticed how God -awful the Google search results are now? What the fuck with the “restricted/open in app” bullshit?!?!

furthermore in fact, you’d think the primary goal of a discussion site would be to better the experience for the user, not the advertiser. the site exists to facilitate a user’s posts, not an advertiser’s schemes and whims
They could have had third party apps and kept the advertisers happy. All they had to do was put ads into the API and kill access for any app that didn’t show those ads.
This was about user data, I suspect. Way too many apps request and acquire more permissions and data than is remotely acceptable, but people put up with it for lack of alternatives. Reddit’s leadership wanted not just the users’ data from using reddit, but all the data they could siphon off from direct access to users’ phones.
