Yeah, it’s one of those sad but beautiful things. I’m glad he went this route instead of trying to find some way to phone it in or something.
It’s always nice to see things come to their natural conclusion, without overstaying their welcome.
He’ll disappear for a little while get bored and keep doing it.

They don’t. He did discover the absolutely horrible pain of trying to sleep whilst having exposed tissue in the tips of every finger though.

I don’t know about not enough recognition, there’s plenty of awesome channels with only 1K subscribers. He has 2M subscribers and 1M views per 30 min+ video about random old appliances. That amount of recognition is impressive.
I love technology connections too though.
TC’s videos are kinda too long for my taste tho (tom scott length is ideal)
There are so many fucking good ones. It’s less of a sea and more if an entire galaxy at this point, and there’s whole planets to explore.
Totally agree. YouTube is a place I can watch someone tinker with some 30 year old CAD software on 30 year old hardware for an hour, and somehow there’s 100k other weirdos enjoying the same content.
God I wish discovery features were better. There’s so much great stuff out there but it’s so hard to find it.

End of an era
Before anyone gets really bummed, his channel’s not going away. He’s just taking a much deserved break from ten years of weekly uploads (which is an absolutely insane record considering the quality of his content).
Jesus… I watch his content and never realized he did weekly! That’s incredible with his quality of content.
Man, I thought he was quitting for something that happened but it’s just a (well deserved) break, good for him.
I hope he takes all the rest he deserves and starts uploading again whenever he feels like it (even switching to an irregular schedule would be fine, most channels that keep a weekly one end up getting stale at some point and the fact he’s been doing it for ten years with this level of quality is amazing)

He doesn’t seem the type that’s able to stop doing something. My bet is he’ll take a well deserved break and come back full force with a new project.
A couple of years back he did stop the park bench with Matt cold turkey though… So I can see him stopping or massively slowing down his main channel stuff, but he will keep doing other things on the side for sure!
He then started up Tom Scott Plus and they ramped up the technical difficulties channel so it holds that he probably only stopped one thing so he could start something else.
I could defnitely see that. I get the sense he has a particular penchant for deep dives and sharing knowledge which would make such a channel appealing (from a creator’s perspective). He definitely deserves a break. After the last few years, we all do TBH

A well deserved break, the amount of travelling he does for his videos must be an insane amount of miles.
I want to believe that he has accumulated many air miles, and is going on one hell of a holiday.

I’ve loved his content for years now. He did say that he was just slowing down, not stopping and I fully support him prioritizing life.
Clearly we are all fans here, so I’ll ask what other channels people would recommend?

Really enjoy that channel. Want to watch 3 hours of content about juke boxes, or laser discs? He’s got you covered, and that’s way more interesting than it sounds like it should be.
I didn’t think I’d ever feel passionately about heat pumps, but thanks to his channel I’ll happily try to convince anyone I talk to that they need to switch to one.
I wasn’t expecting to watch a one hour long video about fridges a few days ago but yet here we are. He has a way about keeping me engaged with things I never knew I wanted to know

I’d add Mark Rober, legal eagle, cinema therapy, half as interesting (also a Wendover productions), and Kyle hill

I believe he thinks he is correct, but he lacks a background in most things he touches, and consistently gets in wrong. Pick a subject you know a lot about and watch one of his videos to see what I mean.
For me, it was his video on Space Junk. There are also many other response videos to him. One I think is from an econ professor on Harris’ recent 4 econ videos.

Every Frame A Painting is one of those dead channels. But Every single one of their videos are masterpieces.
Jackie Chan, Robin Williams, and Buster Keaton are the cream of the crop though
It’s a different approach from Every Frame, but Thomas Flight scratches the same itch for film analysis.

It’s weird to see AvE recommended these days. I used to never miss a video, but unsubscribed over a year ago when the content felt like it fell off.
As for long form videos, I’d highly recommend Defunctland or Super Eye Patch Wolf.

Yeah, he certainly had a slump, and went political for a bit, but seems to be at least somewhat returning to form.
For content by an English guy that travels to interesting places for nerds, there’s the Tim Traveller. He’s basically lower budget and only does Western Europe from what I can tell.
Not a YouTube channel, but he recommended the book “Because Internet” by Gretchen McCulloch, and if you like his linguistics stuff you’ll like the book too
It’s crazy how he’s been doing it non-stop for 10 years. A well deserved vacation.
His content never disappoints. I’ve only started watching in the last few years so I’ve got some backlog I can catch up on.
IIRC, in a vid a few months ago he said he’d still make content, just not in the current weekly format.

Idk where this upheaval always comes from when a Youtuber decides to not work for a while. If Dan Smithson in 69 Boredom-Boulevard, Unspectacular-City, Illinois decides to take a break from freelance-work, no one bats an eye. But if a Youtuber does it, everybody loses their minds!
Because Dan Smithson in 69 Boredom-Boulevard, Unspectacular-City, Illinois has not contributed anything to my life, as far as I can tell, so his actions are irrelevant to me.
Tom Scott on the other hand has provided a lot of content that I find interesting so naturally anything that stops him from doing the thing I like IS relevant to me.
Likewise, if I quit my job, I don’t expect you to care. But I’m sure my family would care greatly.

I don’t really get why some YouTubers keep a schedule to begin with. I’m fine with them coming out with content whenever they have something, it doesn’t have to be the same time of the week every week. It’s not TV, I’m fine with waiting.
Because that’s what the algorithms that will boost your channel like. Regular once a week videos at least. By taking a break not only do we miss out on shows his show will drop right down in the algorithm and he will lose income

Many of them are trying to play an algorithm and retain consistent views to have a semi consistent salary.
You could do the willy nilly approach but a lot of people struggle to manage bulk amounts of short term money long term.

As the other commenter said rober has a schedule despite long gaps.
Stuff made here is a weird case, he both has to come up with ideas, and actually make them, if he were to do a constant feed like most others he would probably hurt his channel (either quality would go down or there would be room for more quantity at the same quality), and it’s hard to predict exactly how long a project will take.
He’s quite a smart man so managing money probably isn’t a very big concern for him, his viewers also crave his pretty unique content so upon seeing he released more content, they watch it (also hes pretty good about keeping things ad friendly so YouTube has no problem recommending his videos to subs) so maintaining money/viewers isn’t the issue.
The real issue for him is making sure he’s still getting recommended by YouTube to new people despite his big gaps in uploads so he can grow more and do bigger and better projects that aren’t repetitive to his core audience.

Yes, most who use this approach usually burn themselves out extremely quickly. It’s testament to Tom and his content that he has been able to keep this going for 10 years.
yeah, I think most users don’t know the schedule their Youtubers seem to be super stressed out about all the time. They click on whatever appears on their timeline.
You might be fine with waiting, but if your food money depended on YT monetization you’d be stressed out as well. Those schedules are not for you the individual viewer. It’s a preservation strategy to keep videos in the suggestion algo and bring in enough view counts in a short enough time span such that the revenue is worth the amount of resources, time and effort it takes to produce the videos. Time is of the essence here. 1000 views in a 1 y.o. video will produce a minuscule fraction of the money of 1000 views between the first 2 hours of a video premiere. The worse part is that a single miss can mean the end of a channel. All that effort to be put by the algorithm in front of users is completely lost with a single miss of some form of regular schedule and now the channel is back at square 1 making no money or so little as to not be worth the effort to publish again.
