    99.95% spam

lol may I ask what you have to do to get that amount of spam? I at most get one spam mail per month to my server and I have some addresses listed as contact information on my public websites.

Is the prevailing advice still not to bother with self-hosting email?

I am hosting my own mail server for almost a year now and never had any issues with it. So I would recommend hosting one if you’re really into admin and server stuff since many things are quite complex to setup and maintain securely. For outgoing emails I would recommend using smtp2go or Mailgun to make sure that your emails always get delivered and don’t go to spam. Sending emails without a relay can be quite difficult and unreliable with some providers.

There are enough people that don’t have the technical knowledge to host their own instance which happily pay Bitwarden to do so. If I host my own software and pay for the servers myself I’m not gonna pay a monthly fee just to be able to use the software. Maybe a one time payment, but definitely no subscription.

  • No definitely not because you can think of the VPN just as a tool that you use to connect to your VPN provider, but the real anonymity you get by your provider hiding your identity and forwarding your request anonymously. A self-hosted VPN is rather used for connecting to your house from outside to for example access a private server, if you use it for torrenting at home it will be exactly the same as if you wouldn’t use a VPN at all.
