Crawling is not really the elephant in the room, really. The issue is ranking and I don’t see how they plan to address that for having good quality
(Oh and of course if you don’t want to self host and you don’t want your queries to be proxies by random Joe with the public instances, go for the engine you want to “donate” your attention to. I would go for Ecosia just because they seem the most ethical of all, including DDG…. But your choice)
The vast majority of the quality comes from the result ranking (that is what people generally refer as indexes albeit indexes are slightly different conceptually). In practice there are two main indexes/ranking (a) Google (b) Bing. DDG, Ecosia, yahoo are, at best, tuning the ranking (not sure if they make things better or worse with that).
This is the reason if you want meaningfully better quality you need searXNG. Because combining results from multiple search engines you grt both main indexes.
There is a ranking/quality problem there as well because how do you join the results of multiple search engines? I think it simply uses a “voting” system where it bumps the results from most search engines. This also means that you want a “balanced” number of search engines based on Google and Bing otherwise you’ll get mainly Google or mainly bing results. Or you may just enable only Google and Bing, really 🤷♂️
If there will be new indexes (e.g. the new European one) you may want to enable them as well but this kind of problems take time to become competitive with giants like Google and Bing (albeit with enshittification this gap is being reduced)
If you like football and your best friend doesn’t like football, what do you do? You beg your best friend to play football… but if they really don’t like football or it is just a “once in a while thing” what you do? Probably find another friend or group of friends that like football. Your best friend likely stays your best friend but now you are happy, your best friend is not annoyed by you asking playing football and you have new friends
Of course you don’t hide or lie to your best friend on what you do and when… otherwise they would be (rightfully) upset but if you share and they are mad that you want to have new friends it’s on them to be unreasonable.
Well here Ethical non monogamy in a nutshell in a context where it is socially acceptable 🤷♂️
Do you realise that kids before puberty don’t have much difference from biological point of view. Sexual organs are not developed or fully developed and no hormones to speak of.
The story of Lego you said… cool you can control parents behaviour… what about peer pressure? Or the idea was to control the parents of a whole town (including Cartoons and TV shows)?
Yeah as I said… emotional education should not be only for boys.
Sorry mate (or congratulation… depending from the context 🙂)
Boys are taught to ignore emotions (“are you crying? Man up!”)
But emotions is what connects humans (and animals for that matter) and can’t really be ignored anyway
Join the two… and you get loneliness, frustration, rage.
We should start a conversation on emotional education (not only for boys but especially for boys)

- the president
- the houses
- the supreme court
Guess who scored all of them?
Incidentally this is the reason the judiciary power in other democracies is self governed (e.g., judges elect their own supreme court) and parties in the judiciary are forbidden
But… well… here we are 🤷♂️
As someone you would call “European” there are massive cultural, behavioural and religious differences in Europe.
Not the differences you imagine like NJ vs California vs Texas, much more
And you know what? It’s a good thing and nobody wants to change that. After centuries we even stopped having fun at each other.
Diversity is scientifically and provably good for creativity that in turn is good for everything humans do
In the case of smoking, you can go to an extreme (Berlin) where people smoke in the clubs (even if it is forbidden) to another extreme (Dublin) that is pretty much like US

Their leader started illegal activities when he was 17 (wiki) so unlikely to have experienced torture and mutilation since a young age. Also no matter the industry, leaders of large organisations (from religions to criminal gangs) are never stupid and/or ignorants
But this is beyond the point, it was clearly something that will never happen
But, sure, say a random thing to a stranger on internet to look badass when you don’t know anything anyway

We all rely on a supply chain of software. This open source library from a French guy hosted on an GitHub, this linkable but closed source library for interacting with this piece of hardware, this componed developed by people all around the world and hosted in Germany.
Heck even the Linux kernel kicked out Russian maintainers for this exact reason.
If the S* will hit the fan as the s* promised during election, I expect more and more government mandated backdoors.
Imagine the s*show of log4j but this time in boost or gcc std library made in a way that seems an innocent mistake, hard to trigger and hidden in the changelog and submitted at the same time a legitimate change in the same file happen

diffusiveto Technology•Signal downloads spike in the US and Yemen amid government scandal | TechCrunchEnglish201·22 days agoThe chat space is problematic.
- There are a lot of apps that don’t encrypt at all (e.g. Google chat, discord, etc)
- There are apps that encrypt but they are subject to jurisdictions that can or may in the future force backdoors (e.g., Chinese apps, possibly telegram, possibly US apps in the future)
- There are apps that encrypt, are in countries that are privacy focused but are not for free (e.g., threema)
This contributes to a fragmentation that makes WhatsApp the app that-you-must-have
Sure it is supposedly encrypted but I would not bet my money that is without back doors
