No, theirs is far worse than basic in-group and out-group dynamics. They literally create the divide. This is NOT some team going, “lol otherteam sucks, we’ve got 'em in the playoffs this time!”

They’ll even demonize and cast out their own if they don’t stay in line. It is NOT basic in-groups and out-groups. It’s long since moved on to literal cult-like behavior.

It’s not just signaling groups. It’s creating them and the division.

In my opinion that’s lazy thinking. Every person is participating in in-group/out-group dynamics whether they are aware of it or not.

Yes, and it’s beyond lazy to confuse the malicious sort with the normal sort.

My point was more like pretty much no one thinks it’s them who is being malicious. You need to have some empathy in politics to be able to properly engage with people who don’t share your views, especially if you are trying to convince them that they might be in the wrong.

My point is not everyone IS being malicious about in-groups and out-groups.

Most of these right wingers will openly boast of malice unfortunately. I’m often intentionally malicious with jokes towards the wealthy and powerful, as I do really want us to bully them into submission.
