Patriots coach Jerod Mayo has chosen Jacoby Brissett as the team’s starting quarterback as the veteran held off a late surge from rookie Drake Maye.

Man, I was excited for the season and now I barely want to watch.

Drake made the right plays consistently. Jacoby did not.

And Mayes physical tools unlock the entire offense with his ability to move the pocket and to make teams cover the whole field instead of 20 yards, so you’re not even allowing the young players everywhere else to establish themselves.

Don’t worry, Maye will probably be starting by week 4, maybe week 6 at the latest. Brissett isn’t good enough to be able to hold him off for long.

That’s a bunch of wasted weeks. Your backup doesn’t have meaningful time to practice.

And Jacoby’s inability to threaten on vertical routes and throws outside the numbers keeps the receivers from developing comfort with the spacing the offense is designed to provide, and condenses the box to make it harder for the backs as well. It lowers the quality of game reps for all the skill guys.

Assuming Mayo is a good coach, this could just mean that he senses their locker room trusts Jacoby and will need to see proof that Maye is better in games, that Maye will benefit from being brought along slowly even if he’s already better, or maybe just that the OL hasn’t gelled yet and whover starts weeks 1-4 is in for a bad time, LOL.

Brissett is almost certainly on a short leash.

I really think he listened too much to AVP thinking Brissett’s presnap run adjustments are somehow going to make the offense run better than having a QB who threatens the defense.
