And they probably only became captain after seeing their old cap turned into an incubator in a alien zoo or something.
Or the early captains in older ships were exposed to far more radiation, chemicals, substances, parasites, bacteria, viruses, telepathy, hallucinogenic and whatever other unknown energies that were then unknown during their time.
They would have lived with these effects for a lifetime before it was discovered that they might have been exposed or affected by these exotic conditions.
Which may explain why many of them who became admirals were so unbelievably stupid.
