In civilised places, yes. I don’t know Spanish law, but in my little corner of the communist hellscape/paradise that is Europe, self-defense has to be proportional. Causing a disproportionately severe injury or death when it could’ve been avoided is a crime. You can’t just attack someone and potentially cause serious injuries because of a failed theft attempt. It’s a deterrent, and you can disagree with it, but (together with other anti-violence laws) it obviously works. Knife/axe/unarmed attacks still make national headlines for several days, and gun violence is pretty much nonexistent.

But then in civilised places they don’t hand out firearms like it’s candy at a Willy Wonka publicity event, nor do they have laws dedicated to glorifying their possession… maybe people who live in a country that’s had over 7000 gun-related deaths and 223 mass shootings since the start of the year (trusting this source is your prerogative) have a different perspective on the escalation of violence.
That all is fair. It’s probably illegal here, but the theif would have to report it, which would get them caught, the cops may or may not care and would likely consider it deserved, and the district attorney would likely consider it political suicide to press charges.
I’m not saying this is how a society necessarily should be run, but here the controversy would be if you applied deadly force to a pickpocket, while a few hits with fists as a “don’t you dare try that on me again” would be publicly considered warranted, even among people who oppose the police doing such things and the use of unnecessarily deadly self defense.
And your opinion on our gun violence is fair and respectable. We should’ve joined Australia in their response to the mass shooting epidemic back in the 90s, but currently no solutions are currently feasible and we have managed to develop bigger problems at the moment.
