    Well that was devised before parties existed. The most popular candidate was president and the person with the second most votes became vice president. It was a way to force compromise but, of course, we amended the constitution to have P and VP run together.

    So, originally, if the president died, vacated office, etc., it was the second most popular presidential candidate that became president.

      Yeah, that’d be even worse under the current climate. All they’d have to do is get second place, and then BANG! Change of plan, boys!
