I first was on Lemmy, now on kbin. Kbin is just a much more nicer experience. Also it’s not developed by tankies who glorify f*cking Mao Zedong. Simple as that.

The Lemmy devs claim the tankie thing was a claim by one Mastodon user with no proof. I keep people say they are, but haven’t seen anything yet to back it up. Including several comments where people have asked for proof. Is there any?

Fair enough, but unless their politics influence the platform then there really isn’t an issue. So far they don’t, and there isn’t.

I just looked a bit through the mastodon accounts of core developers.

No, the developers of Lemmy themselves are of the strong belief that anti-China and anti-Russia news is all U.S.-led propaganda and will ban users for even stating different beliefs on lemmy.ml, which they run.

Top comment here is what informed me, and appears to have been updated with even more info:

        https://kbin.social/m/[email protected]/t/45917/Update-from-Lemmy-after-the-Reddit-blackout#comments

Edit: I can’t confirm this because it’s hearsay, but I was told somewhere that lemmy and lemmygrad both “resolve to the same IP,” which some assumptions could be made about if true.

The tankie thing keeps pushing me away from lemmy, but lemmy seems to be the only software getting clients at the moment. So I’m torn. I want an iOS client badly, but I don’t want to support tankies.

I suppose I shouldn’t sell out for a nice app though.

Not like they get money from that, they do get money from donations, but I don‘t think just using an open source product is support.

I use like hundreds of open source things and idk the ideology of any of the devs and I don‘t care, they could turn out to be serial killers, I don‘t see my use of their product as an issue. Monetary support is the difference to me.

Maybe I got some messed up morals though, wouldn’t be the first time.

Social networks, even open source ones are only successful if lots of people use them. The more people who join and contribute to the community, the more other people will find things that interest them and then join. Any engagement with the network increases it’s reach and therefore influence. If that network is run by tankies I’d rather not add to its power.

Lemmy is not ran by tankies, even if it may be developed by one - if the lead devs go off the rails, someone can always fork it and continue development elsewhere; and if any instance goes off the rails it can be defederated (and this is already happening!)

Not all Lemmy instances are run by the Lemmy devs, just lemmygrad and lemmy.ml afaik and since the code for lemmy is open and can be forked, I doubt they are influencing much beyond their own instances.

Stalinists. It originated in British left-wing politics, in reference to British communists who supported the Soviet Union when they sent tanks in to crush the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 (in contrast to those British communists who broke away from the Soviets over this), but nowadays it’s used more generally to refer to that brand of authoritarian leftists who act as apologists for Putin, the Chinese Communist Party, North Korea, etc.

Has there been conducted any studies into where these people come from? Both geographically, generationally, and ideologically. Is it just random people with a fascination with the Soviet Union who somehow end up reading a bit too much Russia Today? Are they brainwashed from birth?

I struggle to believe how any well meaning leftie could take a look at Putin and think “yeah, that’s what I’m talking about”.

Can’t respond with any studies but based on my own experience (and failings), it often begins with a feeling of, “What else have they lied about?” This usually occurs after one starts questioning ‘the system’. At the same time, seeing entities like Russia/China/etc. as the only forces combating whatever represents “the system” for them can contribute to this mindset.

Using the vague “the system” since this pattern of thought isn’t exclusive to any one group, such as tankies, but rather is a more widespread phenomenon.

Russia has also been actively spreading disinformation in western countries for decades. paying communist parties, buying papers etc.

No but same principle, it’s basically people who saw nothing wrong with Stalin using tanks to crush the Hungarian people’s attempt to be free of the USSR.

It was a moment when a lot of the young western communists were disillusioned and noped out of supporting Russian communism. Tankies were the ones who were still down with it.

I agree it works well, but it annoys me that there seems to be no way to collapse comment threads, and on iOS, once you press a menu, it’s impossible to hide it again.

Lemmy, on the other hand, is a shitshow on iOS.
