Actually feeding bread or any other human food is not good for Ducks/Gease etc. So please do not feed them human food. It really makes me angry and shows only ignorance towards animals.

and shows only ignorance towards animals.

I mean…yeah? Most people are ignorant of things like this because they don’t know any better. I can’t be particularly upset at some random park goer that doesn’t know all the nutritional needs of a duck, because why would I assume that’s knowledge they would have? Feeding ducks bread is sort-of ingrained in the public mind, it will take education and time to undo that.

I’ve seen signs up at some parks lately that explain this to people, and that’s a start, but they need to be more widespread, and it will take time.

They can’t get any nutrients from it, they get full on the bread and starve, the high carb content can also give them deformed wings.

Feed them chopped up salad, corn, rice, grapes, or bird seed.

It’s just junk food for birds

Honestly I think the hate for bread is a little out of hand. Is it nutritious? No, but it’s not poison either. As long as it’s only a small part of their diet it’s not hurting anything.

I have a pet bird and 90% of her diet is nutritionally dense foods, but she still gets nibbles of bread and tortillas and so forth because small amounts of treats are perfectly fine. Same concept.

It doesn’t really have any nutritional value for them but it fills them up so they don’t eat as much of the things that they should be eating to get proper nutrition.

When i learned about bread years ago, i went outside with all the peas and goodies i could find. The ducks approached me, waiting for some bread. I gave them peas and they did not understand what it was and refused to even inspect it. It ended with me giving up, laying it on the ground and retreating. And even then, they did not bother to check…

That’s the oddest thing. I had a friend who had some ducks as pets, and they were nearly as voracious as chickens in eating anything they could find, good, bad, or otherwise, even if it was new.

I don’t think they ever had been fed anything other than bread. They had no idea that i was offering them food. I’ve also never seen anyone feed them something healthy. Honestly, i think most people here have no idea whatsoever that bread is unhealthy and also disrupts the peace and quiet of female ducks; a study showed that ducks were fed so much bread that the males had basically all day to chase females around.

If this happens, maybe we should attempt to wake xkcd’s Sheeple. Maybe it would be worse for us, but it can’t be by much and the ducks wouldn’t be able to have everything their own way either.
