…Why Manjaro?
Manjaro has been bizarrely good at getting hardware partners on board. Pine64 (think pinephone, pinetab, SBCs), MinisForum, Slimbook, Tuxedo, etc.
If only they were properly run in other areas.
It’s literally the distro that stopped my distro hopping. Manjaro’s freaking fantastic.
For me it was my gateway to Endeavour, I had Manjaro set up in a way that satisfied my every need and want.
But having to timeshift my system back into a bootable state after a borked update wave every few months was bad enough to kick me out of my complacency, and go looking for something else.
That’s relatable pain. So far I’ve had a stable 5ish years, and only had 2 issues, one being my own tomfoolery with some KDE config, the other being Nvidia, and I don’t gotta tell you kids about Nvidia and Linux, regardless of distro…
ETA: endeavour looks really slick too, thx for broadening my world. Probably need to justify a wipe of a laptop to try that out.
Lower everyone’s expectations so that when it performs better than expected it can be racked up as a win?

Manjaro constantly winds up having really weird issues, they hold packages back in order to make it more stable, but it honestly just broke things far more often then upstream arch did for me. Manjaro and it’s community is also riddled with really weird issues. It was pointed out to me a while ago that manjaro did some updates that broke grub customizer, and when people were trying to figure out what broke and how to fix it, Manjaro instead not only removed grub customizer, but made it conflict with the grub they had so people working on trying to fix it got a shovel full of go fuckyourself in the face

I’m glad steam deck propelled a new wave of handheld consoles that actually has decent specs
I even saw an article yesterday indicating Sony is developing something as well. 2 years away, but still, I never thought they were going to try again after the psp and Vita failure (failure is subjective, I still love my psp). I fully believe the success of the steam deck has revived there interest in it as well.
Is this something new? 'Cause they had that remote-play screen for the PS5 a while back that seemed to come and go without anyone noticing.
Because it’s not the same class of device. The PS Portal is very niche. It’s a $200 device that basically just runs the PS Remote Play app.
I’ve used PS Remote Play on my phone and laptop, and it’s just not good in the cases I actually want to use it: when traveling away from home. Even with a good Internet connection it’s only “okay”. It’s utterly useless when in transit (trains, places, etc.), and 99% useless in any public place (e.g. cafe or library WiFi).
These are all cases where the Switch, Deck, and similar devices excel. The PS Portal addresses a much smaller market.

I mean, Orange Pi never made the SoCs to begin with, so it could well be they’re designing the SBC and just using an AMD laptop chip for this one

You and me both. Could’ve gone with ChimeraOS or HoloISO or even just Arch and it would’ve been better.
Arch requires a keyboard though.
The OS for Steam Deck and Manjaro are both forks of Arch, last I checked, no?

Going with #HoloISO doesn’t seem like it would make much sense to me. As far as I understand it is something like an unauthorized derivative of #SteamOS so you’d be putting yourself at Valve’s whims without Valve okaying it and no voice at all in the development process.
I like getting the dev team of an open distro involved, I guess #ChimeraOS might have been better if they fit that description as well though.
ChimeraOS is basically a totally hardware-agnostic version of SteamOS, though instead of forking SteamOS it’s more like a re-implementation of it from an Arch base.

I welcome more linux based handhelds to the space but I’ll stick with the steam deck myself. At least I know that will be supported for a long time.

Maybe it’s not a pure gaming device. Orange Pi usually makes SBC’s like rpi. Manjaro is a pretty good OS for gaming.

One could think they forgot about a product page and needed someone to quickly cobble together something. The truly funny thing is that they include fonts and a heavy css framework for three images that don’t use any of that.

Right‽ The brand new Steam Deck Killer! Better in every way, except it costs 3x as much and weighs more because it’s got a giant battery (or conversely the battery life sucks).
Like, no shit you can make something more powerful, finding the happy medium of performance to battery life and then making it cost effective AND actually portable are the most difficult parts of what Steam did and those are the things the competitors just seem to completely ignore.
And for how expensive portable consoles can be, I’m not calling anything a “steam deck killer” until I’m also confident it can be repaired and upgraded for years after I buy it.
Finally a competitor that has Linux and uses trackpads.
Too bad they didn’t use a layout similar as the Steam deck. It’s the best layout for a handheld with trackpads. These trackpads are really far down.
Even the steam deck’s touch pads could be moved up more imo however, these look to be pretty much unusable.
And the joysticks are Xbox style and not ps style. If that makes sense.
I wouldn’t call the Deck’s sticks PS style, because PS has them on the bottom. Wii U style?

one of two things, or maybe both, manjaro has a really weird issue with the AUR where they repeatedly pushed updates to pamac that have crippled the AUR.
there are also often times where AUR packages inexplicably break on manjaro so using the AUR while running is is fairly sketchy
I think I understand your latter point. I had no time to invest in another arch build last time I did a reinstall. This was before arch had a gui install. So I went Manjaro. I’ve noticed this problem where sometimes I install direct from aur and it messes stuff with pamac. Now that there’s a gui install for arch I’ll just go back to that next time.
Apparently it is a real device and not fake or a scam like some were suggesting. It is currently being featured at Fosdem at the KDE booth even and it seems to be featuring the SteamOS interface but seemingly on a Manjaro based os.
I assume this means they have taken the HoloISO bits like the gamescope session and interface but rebased it on Manjaro but it could also just mean they forked and rebranded it as Manjaro (and possibly delay updates for two whole weeks in the name of stability).It’s the first linux first handheld device next to the Steam Deck and even comes with two touchpads that look strikingly similar to the Deck ones but never would I have imagined it being featured by Manjaro. The specs look impressive though the design reminds me of the early Steam Deck prototypes Valve showed once that equally featured a glossy finish.

I understand the issues with Manjaro. But I am super excited with handhelds making a major come back. I think the next couple of years we are going to see major breakthroughs. Battery life is currently a big issue but this should be solved with more RND.
I currently play on Switch but I am getting very tempted to cross over to another device. But I will wait to see what Nintendo does next before I decide. A buddy of mine has the Asus ROG Ally which is also pretty impressive on its own.

Similar numbers to the z1 extreme but on lighter software. It could be a good balance. I remember travelling through Europe with a gaming laptop and an Android tablet. The efficiency of that tablet had me using it for games and browsing so much more. Anyway, this could be gaming performance and clos to Android/arm efficiency (vs the windows handhelds)
Does it use free software drivers and firmware?
AMD’s CPU and GPU firmware is non-free.
I should have specified the other components, as that’s sadly a given.
