The Finals is the best shooter that’s come out in a while. It’s chaotic and a little stupid, but also just straight up fun. Assaulting the objective by just completely tearing down the building it’s in is both hilarious and satisfying.

I really hope that this game does well. They have a really cool foundation and it’s nice that it’s a bit of a smaller developer. It’s free, give it a shot!

Also… Aren’t we past these clickbait article titles on Lemmy? You shouldn’t need to click the comments or the article to tell what game it’s talking about.

I’ve been getting a few matches a day in. Really enjoying it. Hopefully the player base picks up some. I seem to have a knack for liking the fpses that fail though.

I guess you could call them smaller. They have about 60% the staff of DICE (where the founders came from) and are backed by big investment money.

They have captured what DICE hasn’t for a while though, which is the fun total destructability that made the Bad Company’s so great.

It’s my favorite game right now. I’d stopped playing for a long while and I’m back to playing almost daily.

This game is so damn good. I can’t even be bothered by all the sensational headlines and influencers jumping over themselves to tear it down. Fuck em all, for sure

This is something I specifically didn’t like about a particular map in Bad Company 2 in Rush. It’s definitely fun for the attackers but defending against that sucks ass.

I haven’t played BC2 but I don’t feel that way at all in The Finals. Defending can be kinda interesting. There are a lot of options when it comes to how and where to defend, and even in the chaotic moments where the entire building tilts and shifts, it’s a lot of fun.

It’s almost never a good idea to defend standing directly on the point. Generally you want cover and an easily accessible line of sight to the cashbox, ideally from above.

        • Does the thing they have to attack get destroyed along with the building? Because that was what made it so not fun on BC2. At least it was just the one map, from what I remember. The last 2 MCOM sites could be capped simply by blowing up the houses they were in so as a defender if you lost to that point, you pretty much lost the game. It would have been fine if they still had to actually get on the thing and defuse/blow it up because without the house, they have no cover.

Nope, the cashbox is indestructible. It can be kinda moved a little by explosions, but not too much.

To steal, someone has to run up to the cashbox and hold a button for about 7 or 8 seconds. It plays a loud alarm sound so it’s fairly easy to stop if you’re nearby, but also since two teams are attacking at once, sometimes you can pull off a steal in the chaos.

Doesn’t help the name and poster art have both been highly unhelpful in explaining what kind of game it is.

they might’ve stopped development, but the game is still alive. finding matches even with only one playlist selected is still pretty fast compared to something like halo mcc

I remember thinking that when playing after they first announced that they weren’t developing for it anymore, but now most of my opponents and teammates seem to be human

      • It’s mostly bots… That’s why I didn’t really stick with it. If there was ever humans in the game, it was only 1 or 2 other people besides myself. And that was when it was new!

The good news is it finally is playable on Linux! I played it in the beta when I still had a Windows install, but I had switched to 100% Linux by the time it launched. It uses Easy AC, which the newer versions support Linux, but I’m assuming it wasn’t using the latest versions, or their own AC stuff was blocking us.

I just found this out yesterday so I haven’t played any post-release yet, but the beta was a fun game so I’d recommend it.

It was longer than a week or two I think. It wasn’t until last month from what I’ve been able to find, though there’s no official statement about it.

Played a fair chunk. It just has a very shallow replay. The guns really aren’t different enough in each class to make them fun, imo. Maybe with attachment customization or more options/balancing but currently the gun play gets stale fast.

Coupled with the lack of levels, and them all somehow feeling very similar, it got repetitive fast.

Some extra game modes would be fantastic. A lot of work, but payload modes or a protect/destroy mode could be a lot of fun with the destrucible environment

As much as I’ve been enjoying it, I’ve found myself alternating more between it and older favorites. I unlocked everything with the free credits and I don’t buy the battlepass so it feels like there’s not much more for players like me.

I’d be willing to contribute with money since I’m having fun but I’ve had 0 interest in all of the cosmetics they’ve released so far.

They just need to make a more interesting gameplay loop. The arena shooter genre is dead, even if this isnt an old school arena shooter, it is somewhat similar. People hate copycats but the reality is that some gameplay loops are better than others. Battle royales and loot extraction gameplay loops are more popular because they are more fun.

Have you actually played The Finals? This seems like a bad take from someone who hasn’t played it… This game is VERY different from arena shooters.

The gameplay loop is pretty freaking rad imo. They also are experimenting with new game modes pretty often.
