There’s some unrest because the Open Collective Foundation is stopping.

Don’t worry, we use Open Collective Europe as a donations platform, they’re going nowhere.

We’ve added some donation platforms, so if you would like to support us running our .world servers, you can do so here:

And for those wanting to donate crypto:

  • Monero address: 83tnuFN4f28jRxTBW9qGDad2U23qNE5nfeW4Pfyd85oWMW7J9gqpXi3S8FDbX5uEeCAKcGnSpS2XT5dGwYiELthg8XuDrxH
  • Cardano address: addr1v9qv6xvfwcx9ny56uag4umu6238sw2e7ff2kcxl3qe7p9esayjxgu

Thank you!

[Edit] Some of the links were broken, they should now all work! [Edit 20240314: Added Liberapay]

Reddit gold was such a great method of voluntary monetization. It’d be great if Lemmy would support something like that (although there are a ton of caveats.)

I had a $30/year subscription to Reddit for more than a decade.

I think Reddit gold can be benign, but let’s not exploit FOMO plz. That’s how we got loot boxes and micro payments.

How to do “Reddit gold” on Lemmy, in a non-exploitive and ethical way? That would be the rub.

The real danger isn’t on Lemmy.World, where I think the money would go where intended. The real danger is incentivizing people to spin up small instances in the hopes of collecting.

That won’t work. I have 340k users on my servers and it just covers the running cost. So with a 100 user instance you would get peanuts.

I guess the cross server implementation would be difficult. If you buy credits on lemm.ee, and gild a lemmy.ml user, who honors it to… not show you ads?

I guess it’s mostly just a decoration thing to support the comment/post and the server. Still, which server displays which awards could get thorny.

Please add the crypto addresses to the site sidebar under donations. You also may want to consider accepting BTC, BCH and LTC. Glad your accepting XMR though for private donations.

How are you covering cash into crypto without paying bonkers fees? I tried to do it via coinbase and the fees are insane. Fuck that.

You can use exchanges like Coinbase Advanced Trading and Kraken Pro to interact directly with the order book. They use the standard maker/taker model. 0.6% for takers on Coinbase Advanced Trading and 0.26% for takers on Kraken Pro. You can use “market” orders if all you want is a buy button and a sell button

Ko-Fi or PayPal directly, or crypto

As a basic principal crypto has the lowest transaction fees. I’m not a lemmy dev so idk what they prefer, but general rule is crypto is cheapest.

I seriously doubt Bitcoin fees are less than PayPal

EDIT: I just checked and the bitcoin transfer fee over the last 3 years was about $1-2, but it has been around $10 the last 3 months. PayPal charges a $2 fee for a $30 payment. The difference is a lot less than I expected.

Oh, and Ruud is a sysadmin of the lemmy.world instance, not a Lemmy dev.

EDIT 2: Ko-fi seems to take a 0% fee on one time transactions.

for small amounts of money, PayPal, cash app whatever is cheap to free, but if you need to send thousands of dollars and convert your currency from USD to Euro or whatever crypto is the cheapest way to do it.

Once you hit the millions mark, strangely enough, it again becomes cheaper to use fiat. For 1,000,000 USD, Kraken Pro’s fee rate is 0.18%, or 1,800 USD to buy and 1,800 USD to sell, totalling 3,600 USD plus exchange rate risk. A USD wire transfer usually costs 20-35 USD to send and 0-10 USD to receive.
