Okay I gotta go on a rant here.

One of Paul’s big defining character traits is his undying love for Chani. When presented with the option to commence a bloody war across the galaxy, or lose Chani, Paul picked the war. He fully neglects his wife, the previous emperor’s daughter that he claimed at the end of the film, in favor of putting all his affection toward Chani. The man is as loyal as they come, and yet he’s being compared to a guy who strangled his wife and tried to murder his best friend.

I really hope Villenue gets his third movie. I don’t dislike the direction he took Paul and Chani’s relationship, I think making Chani a foil to Jessica was quite inspired, but as it stands Paul looks like a complete and utter monster at the end of Dune 2. The choice between Chani and the jihad that he is making isn’t really communicated clearly, and her running off into the sunset away from him makes it look like Paul has betrayed her and used the Fremen so he could chase power.

      “Allegedly”

We can’t trust holographic records put out by jedi scum.

We can’t see Paul’s internal struggle that is critical to his character development, I think introducing that conflict through Chani was smart as hell for a film translation, even though it changes their trajectory.

not to mention… Dune was first published in '63, book form in '65? ANH hit theaters in '77. it’s Anakin that should be compared to Paul, not the other way 'round.

Paul and Chani’s relationship isn’t as strong in Part 2 due to the very compressed time scale, changing the plot from spanning a few years to a few months. Sounds like Villeneuve is expecting Part 3 to be greenlit, though, so hopefully it will have their relationship develop more.

I’d say one of the biggest issues is it’s missing the ending, which wouldn’t make sense the way Jessica is in this version but some form of it was needed. Jessica tells Chani essentially that they both know Paul won’t even touch Princess Irulan and he’s marrying her out of necessity. History will remember her and Chani as the true wives of the men they loved. Having her walk off into the desert instead of having this gives a totally different feeling.

It also leaves a question for Messiah that the books don’t really do. The picks continue 12 years later, but it’s exactly where we expect with the Queen shunned and Chani as Paul’s love. I don’t know how Messiah will start with this one, but a 12 year jump will be strange.

I’m doing my part! I bought two tickets opening weekend, and I almost never go to the movies since I have a nice entertainment center at home. I’ll probably buy the movie on 4k when it’s released too. I love Villeneuve’s work. The relationship did seem strained in the movie though, so much so that I couldn’t remember if it was in the book or if he was just adding it because Hollywood blockbuster formulas say he should. Hopefully he tidies that up in part 3.

“I love you Padme but the Emperor has a daughter that if I marry, I’ll have even more power than control over all Spice and the ability to see the future.”

So sucks to be you. But don’t worry that marriage will be a sham. However my Jedi powers let me see the future and by my marrying the Emperor’s daughter, you’ll be poisoned and die. So let’s live it up until then.

    Unlimited Power!

    I’d watch him duel Anikin.

Even if Anakin doesn’t figure out the trick to bypass the personal shields, a good Force Choke would work, right?

Maybe the light saber interacts with Dune shields the same way they do with lasers: a very big explosion.

I couldn’t stop thinking about that Star Wars meme through this whole part of the movie. 🤣
