Yeah, that’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.

Well. The front didn’t fall off, at least.

There’s got to be restrictions on what materials bridges can be made of

Thank you for bringing that reddit touch to lemmy. Hopefully someone comes along with a quip about cardboard. That sure would be funny.

I find it’s is peak funny once it gets fully explained, just like all the best jokes.

Will they have it back up on time for morning rush hour?

Morning rush hour has already started, but it doesn’t appear that the bridge is repaired yet.

In the longer version you can see the ship lights go out for about 30 seconds prior. It seems plausible that the ship has a power system malfunction and could not recover in time due to inertia.

        From the article…

The ship’s crew issued a mayday call moments before the crash took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span, Maryland’s governor said.

        … and …

The six people still unaccounted for were part of a construction crew filling potholes on the bridge, said Paul Wiedefeld, the state’s transportation secretary.

A senior executive at the company that employed the construction workers said Tuesday afternoon that they were presumed dead, given the water’s depth and the length of time since the crash.

It really is incredible. With the bit of vagueness about the vehicles in the water, I thought they were expecting to find more, but glad they were able to stop traffic in time.

The port will most likely shut down because of cleanup, so this fucks more than just car traffic. Fun times

Yeah it’s the biggest port for importing vehicles to at least the eastern US. Here come more excuses to raise the price of cars( and probably eggs, because why the fuck not profit off the misery.

Wow, went straight into the piers. Oof.

Now with the addage: Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

That’s some intense stupidity. Hope everyone involved is alive and uninjured.

With the ship barreling toward the bridge at “a very, very rapid speed,” authorities had just enough time to stop cars from coming over the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said.

They rescued at least 2 people from the water according to NBC, one in serious condition, the other released at the scene. Looks like at least 6 more missing though.

It’s just a ship that crashed into a flimsy bridge.

I mean I can’t speak to how “flimsy” this particular bridge is, but it was hit by a container ship. Those things weigh in the hundreds of thousands of tons. It doesn’t much matter how sturdy your bridge is, it’s going down.

Then that bridge needed to be reinforced a long time ago, or ships like that shouldn’t be allowed there. This was a flimsy bridge for what it is dealing with.

Again, getting hit head on by a cargo ship, you may as well be throwing the empire State building at it. There is not a bridge on earth that would survive that collision.
