Dungeon Meshi is a well liked manga, and an adaptation by Studio Trigger is now airing. If you haven’t picked this one up, consider joining us. Both for fun and as a way of contributing to activity on Lemmy.

Episodes are available to stream on Netflix.

It’s a classic episode!

Heading down to the sixth level now, the gang is back to their everyday shenanigans.

Running into trouble and cooking it for dinner.

Remember not to spoil anything if you’re a manga reader, but feel free to elaborate on tidbits of lore that may not be coming through in the adaptation.

If you missed it, check out Lios’ character sheet that I posted.

The gang takes a break from big business to spend an episode on what feels like a corporate escape/trust building exercise.

I like that despite Marcys, Chils, and Senshis valid worries, Laios proves himself in the end. This episode also adapts some of my favorite panels from the manga.

Each of the dopplegangers are also subtly wrong in a way that’s simply hilarious. Like the two Chil’s imagined by Marcy and Senshi being cuter and more childish that the real one.

Chils version of Marcy is an old hag that goes on about forbidden magic. Marcy seems to think of Laios as “Falyn’s brother”. And I’m not sure whose head birthed “Handsome Senshi” but I love that he exists.

Can’t wait for next week. You might think a show can only have one “best” girl but you are about to be proved wrong.

Ahem…the real handsome Senshi is the Senshi we have had along the way. Lest you forget episode 9 Senshi:

Senshi is staring into your soul

Or, my personal favorite, episode 7 Senshi:

      Twintail Senshi

I kept trying to think of which character each illusion came from. I can’t narrow down handsome Senshi, and I’m not entirely sure if derpy Laios is from Chilchuk and tall Laios is from Senshi or vice versa. I think Chilchuk probably has more respect for Laios because he’s followed him for a while and he likely appears taller, but I’m not sure why Senshi would think of Laios as derpy. Plus Chilchuk seems like he probably thinks everyone is a little dumb because he takes everything so seriously.

The “derpy” Laios also kept going “I wanna eat monsters” which I don’t think would be a Senshi thing. Hence my guess is Chilchuck, and the tall Laios would be Senshis.

No, I think that derpy “I wanna eat monsters” Laios would be from Marcille, the “superiority complex” ace student and reluctant-to-eat-monsters person

          Tall Laios is Chilchuck

          Falin-face effeminate wimpy Laios is…Senshi?

I think handsome Senshi has to be Chilchuk by process of elimination. Because Marcille pointed him out so he wasn’t from her mind and Laois picked derpy Senshi as authentic so handsome Senshi wasn’t from his mind either.

I’d say he was Chilchucks, as the Senshi without a notch in his helmet is implied to be Laios’. He makes a face as if noticing there’s a notch for the first time when Chil points it out.

I think I can guess which person thought up handsome senshi. Marcy was the one who noticed something was off about Senshi and the others brushed it off Chil and Laios both thought he was handsome already.

However, Laios is the one who noticed something wrong about handsome senshi at the end. Senshi wouldn’t have been careless about just taking from a monster nest. Chil likely imagined Senshi a bit more careless than he really is when it comes to monsters.

So I think Chilchuck imagined Senshi handsome.

I think the story needed this episode. Since the confrontation with the red dragon the story has been at times tense, depressing, or melancholy. I think having an episode that gets the group chemistry back in sync is great. We got a chance to lighten the mood and laugh at everybody else’s mental images of each other.

I did notice that the new character’s hand was the one that grabbed Marcy’s during the blizzard, however, since Marcy couldn’t see anything, she probably thinks it was a shapeshifter. Actually, that raises the question of where the shapeshifter versions of the newcomer are. Perhaps there wasn’t a strong enough mental image that they all shared of each other to be included?

Looking forward to the new companion! She must be fairly skilled to avoid being detected until now despite the party’s abilities (and Chilchuck’s ears). Also, it seems like we have lost the blood trail at this point after all the shapeshifter nonsense, so the only way is into the maze of the 6th floor at this point.

Having lost Shuro the gang really needs a DPS, I sure hope this person is good in combat.

We’re about to see some chapters I’ve been really looking forward to, adapted. We won’t just learn about the new member. Now that the world and characters have been established, it’s time to use these characters and their environment for some damn good storytelling and feels.

The whole sequence of Laios jumping at the mimic, the dramatic cuts to Senshi and Chilchuck’s faces to Marcille just casually blowing up the mimic was so funny, I had to rewind and watch it again. This episode felt more lax and fun like older episodes, enjoyed it very much.

I’ve seen people say how Kabru is the invert of Laios, he’s the people expert while Laios is the monster expert, but this episode showed how Laios is plenty good at people too when he feels like it.

Excited to meet the new member, she doesn’t seem the most friendly but Senshi’s cooking will remedy that before long I’m sure. I was half expecting the mimic to be the new party member until Marcille blew the poor puppy’s head clean off, RIP (._.)

Those tails looked very fluffy… It looked like they maybe kept the hide?

I wanna gush about this coming character so bad but it’d be all spoilers.

Yeah fluffy puppy, I hate watching doggies die >.> understandable though, Senshi probably butchered and kept a bunch of parts from the mimic like he does with all the monsters they kill for future meals.

I’m very curious about the new member, but yeah, no spoilers!
