Happy Memorial Day to all the US members of the community (and also the non-US members, nothing stopping you from celebrating too I guess). Have a new general thread for the week! Please use this thread as you see fit. Let us know what you’ve been reading, questions you might have, recommendations, etc.

Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).

I finally had some free time over the weekend and decided to spend some of it browsing through manga aggregator sites in search of something that could catch my interest. I’m happy to report I did manage to do just that. Here’s what I found so far:

    • Sui and Neri of the Twilight Planet - cute and short (15 chapters) slice-of-life series about a girl, Sui, and a sloth (Neri) running a small inn on a dying Earth. It has plenty of sweet moments, talking animals and just exudes the feeling of comfy - I highly recommend this one. Also, art style reminds me of Tsukumizu’s work (author even drew a story for Girls’ Last Tour Official Anthology Comic).
    • Hotel - Since 2079 - story about an AI managing a “vault” with human DNA after our extinction due to climate change. It’s… not bad but also isn’t particularly amazing though it has its moments (ending worked for me more than expected honestly). It’s a oneshot so you won’t waste too much time if you dislike it. Author took another stab at this story few years after the initial release but I haven’t read that version yet so can’t comment on the differences.
    • Genocidal Organ - sci-fi series about an American special forces assassination unit. Kinda edgy, kinda interesting, only 11 out of 28 chapters are translated to English (with the last update 6 years ago). Not the best thing ever based on what I’ve read but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t hook me in the slightest. Oh well…

Seems like there’s a trend of portraying gyarus as really nice and lovable girls (like in 100 girlfriends, misaki-kun, gal & villainess, etc).

Not that there is anything wrong with it. Just found this trend interesting.

Pretty sure it’s cyclical, same as other trends. Most ridiculous one, albeit interesting, was the gyaru transported back to the Taishō era.

A couple things I have been reading this past week that I wanted to highlight:

    • Juuou to Yakusou - I have previously written about this fantasy series. However, the chapters that were on Mangadex were pulled down by the old translator. Another group has taken up the mantle and started working their way through. I have really enjoyed the first volume of this series that has released so far. It has long chapters, so I don’t think that they will release super quickly, but I really can’t wait for more of this series.
    • Akanabe-sensei Doesn’t Know about Embarrassment - I can’t remember if I mentioned this series before or not, but I just did some catching up with it this past week and have had fun. Quick story synopsis is that a manga author has an assistant that falls in love with her, however she doesn’t understand people well enough to know why her assistant is so embarrassed all the time about doing relationship things.
    • Kiraware Majo to Karada ga Irekawatta Keredo, Watashi wa Kyou mo Genki ni Kurashiteimasu! - I found this series this past week and quickly binged the available chapters. I don’t really know what is going on yet in the big picture, but tl;dr is that there is a princess unable to use magic that ends up getting her body swapped into a witch’s body in which she can use magic. She then proceeds to do cute, slice of life things and the big story that drove the beginning events disappears into nothing. So, maybe that will matter? Who knows, but in the meantime, it is cute.
    • Tengoku Daimakyou - I am re-reading this series to get caught up to current. I am currently in the middle of Volume 7 and loving the hell out of it again. The way that this series is able to foreshadow things literally volumes in advance is amazing. When I am reading and a mystery is resolved, I feel like Sherlock Holmes piecing together all the clues I had seen ages ago. I really think this series benefits from being binged for that reason so that things are fresh in your mind as you read. However, I am hoping to get caught up quick so that I can keep up with the posts in this community going forward.
