The German federal government pushing the EU towards sensible energy policy?? Am I dreaming?

    This made my day!

The government is kind of progressive now. The green party is part of it. The conservatives are not part of it at the moment…

Oh I’m aware of “the traffic light”, it just feels like it’s been a while since Germany pushed the EU forward instead of holding us back (arming Ukraine, regulation about combustion engines in future cars, etc)

Habeck is a member of the Greens and the Greens are in fact rather sensible. They

          a) have supported arming Ukraine (along with FDP, while SPD has dithered), almost from the start

          b) are not at fault for the German Vote, rather that is the doing of FDP, silently supported by chancellor Scholz

I guess (and hope) Scholz is not like Merkel, but German leadership is kind of hit or miss.

Good, green and security goals align with weaning off cheap russian fossil fuels, this will be good for energy independence in the long term.

Isn’t Germany changing nuclear for fossils? That’s the last I heard but I’m not up to date.

They did that because of Fukushima and some sociological factors in the german population (which maybe come from Chernobyl’s time too)…I’m sure they regretted putting all chips on gas after the invasion of Ukraine…but then again with what is happening in the ZNPP, I’m not so sure anymore. Germany is not in a seismic zone, but it is in the European plain after all, which is a recurrent geopolitical problem.

Nah we did that because the conservative government fucked up the energy transition so badly it’s hard to not assume intent. Had we actually followed the 2000 plan and trajectory we’d already be self-reliant at least when it comes to electricity (Germany will always need imports for chemical feedstuff etc).

They delayed many measures so that the likes of RWE were given time to change their investments over to renewables because competition from non-gigantic companies is something they really don’t like, that Fukushima nuclear exit is part of the delay strategy: First they extended the run-time of existing nuclear plants, with Fukushima they retracted that again in anticipation of political backlash, they never touched the law on there not going to be new plants.

They failed to make the network ready for renewables, like the badly needed north-south connection. Instead they rather blame everything on NIMBYs they a) incited themselves and b) could easily be pacified by burying cables. I get it you have an idyllic and scenic mountain village in a nice valley I wouldn’t want to have pylons there, either. Not an unsolvable problem, though.

They even single-handedly destroyed the German solar panel industry, alongside with 80000 jobs.

I’m really confused…Are they downvoting me because Germany did not change nuclear with fossils? That’s what everyone was saying in the news… I’m not European… Sorry if I’m not up to date with German politics… It was literally a question. Lemmy is so toxic.

You’re right actually. Lemmy is full of Germans however, and criticism of the Vaterland is not welcome

lol. Complaining about Germany is what Germans do. It’s like the top social activity.

But do they like it when people outside of Germany do it? I just asked a question and said “I’m not sure”, and still got downvoted.
