What’s fucking delusional is thinking that a bunch of civilians armed with handguns and rifles could ever match a modern military should it come to violent revolution or, alternatively, that arming civilians with the kind of weaponry that WOULD do the trick isn’t just a recipe for needless slaughter.
It’s not actually about winning against the military. The civics justification for having guns is to make harassment campaigns more accessible when necessary. (Any sustained resistance resistance campaign would have to have outside supply lines.) No modern rebel group has taken on an established military on equal footing. The goal is to make oppressing the population extremely annoying, not to actually be in control yourself. In order to actually run a government you need a different set of skills than to run a resistance campaign, but a resistance campaign might become necessary until we can restore the government to a just one.
There’s other justifications for individual ownership of firearms, but that’s the one most similar to what you’re thinking of.

You just have to make it expensive enough that the military doesn’t want to fight, and you need to have enough of the civilian population on your side that the gov’t can’t control them, too. As the gov’t commits atrocities against its’ own people in an attempt to crush a rebellion, it ends up creating more ideological rebels.
And anyways, you’ll note that the US has tended to get pretty fucked up when dealing with insurgencies and guerilla warfare where it can’t leverage air superiority. How many, say, Air Force pilots do you think will start refusing orders when they find out that their last ‘precision bombing’ run killed 150 children in a hospital?

I get what you are saying but it also makes me think you havent spent much time in the woods. It takes a very different mindset being in the woods inhabited by bears with and without a firearm. They were never around our property but their population has grown a ton in recent years and we have a couple that hang out on our 300 acres in between when the steelhead are running. They’re cool as fuck and since they’ve been more prevalent the coyote population seems to be gone but when I come over the top of a ridge or up to a thicket, it’s fuckin terrifying not having a gun. I know black bears are basically giant cats that run first almost every time but when its cub season or territorial mating season its way more intimidating. Wouldn’t fucking shoot to hit one unless it was fuckin charging but having the ability to fire a couple rounds at the ground to spook a mother and cub away or a horny young male makes it way more comfortable maintaining tree stands, trails or just hiking around. Loud noise is the best defense and firing a gun is sooooo much louder than me yelling or banging branches on the ground lol.
Don’t get me wrong, guns are a very fun hobby and I don’t really buy too much into the defending against people defense for guns but living on 300 acres of woods which is surrounded by fucked if I know how many more acres of neighbor’s and state wooded property, having a fire arm makes it way more peaceful when you racing the sunset to get back to your 4wheeler or truck.

A. Tanks throw a lot of metal shrapnel through the air, piercing organs and leaving behind bone fragments that would ruin the meat. B. When hunting, you aren’t trying to kill large groups of animals and inflict maximum damage. C. Large groups of animals aren’t typically going inside an enclosed structure and that’s where bombs are most effective. The point is that people will always find a way to kill other people no matter what you ban. I’m not trying to get into a debate but guns have been around for quite some time with very few mass shootings so it’s something else recently that is triggering all this. If it’s a useful tool for hunting (either prey) I’d say the point applies - guns turn people unable to kill into people able to kill. If it’s not a useful hunting tool, it maybe indicates gun owners often argue in bad faith with whatever lets them keep their toys.
You don’t always hit the target the first time and you only get a few seconds before the animal gets away or you may be shooting through brush and undergrowth. The same calibers that are in assault rifles also tend to be in regular bolt action rifles.If you have been stalking an animal for days or weeks, you want to reap your reward after all of your work. Just for giggles, go squirrel hunting or rabbit hunting one time and see how you feel about bolt action. I know you have probably never handled a firearm and probably won’t but there are responsible gun owners out there, the mainstream media is only showing off the newsworthy idiots because that’s what gets the views…

Yes, semi auto makes it much easier to hit a victim through bullet spray. By your own point, that makes a semi auto weapon a much, much easier tool to kill a large number of people than fiddling with bombs or bladed weapons. People run, just like squirrels do.

The US is a significant part of NATO, both in terms of raw manpower, and in terms of money spent on the military. Without NATO, Finland probably loses, as long as Russia presses their attack. With NATO, but a NATO without the US, Finland wins, but it takes years. With both NATO and the US, Finland takes Moscow in 2 months.
