“Forgetting”. They do not want to start pulling that thread and I suspect that it is because of instructions from above. No one wants any focus on it. Republicans because of why would a republican wanna kill Trump and general gun control? Not an area where they want speculation to start running. As for the Democrats, investigation into what the fuck the secret service was doing will land on them being the sitting government. So under the carpet it goes. Lone maniac and nothing to see. Move on please.

I think they meant the retired firefighter who was standing behind Trump. No offence, but It’s pretty telling that you also didn’t think of him, as neither did I at first reading.

Uhm, right. My point still stands, though. You can’t lift any story about this because of what that would drag with it. There’s always questions, who is to blame, who didn’t do their job, what was the motivation of the gunman, lots of little threads to pull on without even trying too hard. If that does become a big story, then the questions are inevitable and no one wants to answer questions about a clusterfuck like that. No one can see a winning angle with any certainty, so they just drop everything about it like the hot potato it is.

Only Trump wants it, and he can’t have it, poor guy. Makes my day.

I actually find it really comforting that it’s going back as if it never happened. Don’t get me wrong, I wish the bullet had been a skosh to the right, but hear me out:

America does not give a shit about Donald Trump. The country doesn’t care if he lives or dies. The media cares a lot, but the country doesn’t think it matters that he almost got shot. He didn’t get a bump. He didn’t get a sobbing tearful day show host wondering if he’s ok. He didn’t even put out a commemorative “Trump got shot” bullet and let’s be real, that’s something he could have done himself. Nobody cares. He’s not important to America.

Trump could have done what W did and hand off everything to the VP, and spent all his time golfing, grifting and shit talking, but, because he’s a narcissist, he has to control everything and he’s horrible at it.

Which just goes to show that money makes money. This fool, despite his incompetence, bankruptcy, etc., still has money some how.

This is why I truly believe there is no God.

How the fuck do dipshit millionaires like Trump, monarchs, and wealthy despots all over the world live safe, fantastic, lazy lives of high quality, meanwhile genuinely good-hearted, selfless, caring, hard-working people elsewhere live in abject poverty and danger?

The writers were getting desperate, what with a season people seemed to genuinely not like anymore. The “Trump Gets Shot” arc was a last gasp for attention. But then they fired that old goofy guy playing the president and replaced him with his younger, smoother comic relief character. It was something of a reversal, sure, but it got us back into the old 2008 “Hope and Change” arc, which was a much bigger hit among younger viewers.

And its not like they just retired the middle aged bumbling white guy, either. That new Tim Walz character is pure charm and really works against the smarmy wall street guy they’ve brought in as this year’s new villain.

Personally, I think he’s tired of Tenacious D and this was a good way to kill it. Plus he has more money to lose than Kyle. And I’m sure there was some concern about a concert getting shot up, but I’m sure it was a distant third.

Obviously no idea, pure speculation, but I assume there would have been like, multiple careers in jeopardy if Jack stuck by Kyle initially. Jack Black got big dummy money now. Big dummy careers like this have teams of people involved. I’m sure he was getting threats of being dropped from agencies and upcoming gigs (no more Bowser unless you back off) that played a role in the choice. He’s got enough money to be fine, but what about the others affected? I’m sure it was a terrible place to be.

Truly some devil’s advocate thoughts here; was a punk-ass move distancing himself from Kyle instead of calling out the hypocrisy. Risky jokes have existed since forever - hell Gilbert had 9/11 jokes the very next night. The Right out here selling merch with violent rhetoric for years. The whole thing is goofy.

The way he sold it isn’t that he cares about Trump, but that he cared strongly about being a pacifist. Yeah alright, fair enough. But Kyle Gass is also a pacifist, realised he fucked up, and apologised from that perspective. So is Jack a pacifist, or does he just never give people second chances? :/

Yeah, but this excuse kind of falls apart when you realise they were on tour in Australia, where the likelihood of a) someone caring about Trump enough; and b) has the means to retaliate in a country with far more restrictions on gun ownership.

        • @Buddahriffic

His reaction might have made it into the top 5 reactions to the shots as far as severity of results. The only other reactions that weren’t just words that I’m aware of are the SS eventually noticing and shooting the guy (plus increasing security), the one cop that shot the guy’s gun, and maybe Trump himself getting PTSD. So Jack Black might have had the 4th most severe reaction by cancelling that tour and rethinking any future collaborations.

Hindsight is 20/20 but he probably should have just cancelled a show or two and then would have seen that the whole thing was dropped because it wasn’t generating any sympathy for Trump (quite the opposite, the main sentiments I saw were “sucks he missed” and “we really shouldn’t say that it sucks he missed, even though a lot of us are thinking that”).

If Republicans hadn’t spent the last 30 years trying to make everyone numb to gun culture maybe people would actually give a shit.

Sure, until the 3rd to last episode when the writers have run out of ideas, so the character makes a big production about how he was shot at and feelings and stuff and hopefully it’ll be enough to make us care again till the finale.

I disagree. Trump surviving the asassination gave him a huge publicly. It should also be mentioned that Biden resigned shortly after, so this event really shook up the overall trajectory of the election.

The technical answer to the question is no, he likely did not get hit by a bullet, but some shrapnel instead.

The practical answer to the question is that it was an attempted assassination of a prominent political figure, so it hardly matters where the bullets actually landed - the message is the same.

      • @grue

It matters in the sense that an actual bullet grazing his ear leaves absolutely no room for doubt, while a shot that went wide by a much greater margin and knocked some shrapnel at him by dumb luck lends itself to conspiracy theories.

So why are we being lied to about the assassination attempt on a massive scale? I mean at this point, if they aren’t going to be honest… why believe the general narrative at all?

We’re not? There was an assassination attempt, the FBI did some investigation and found he was likely not hit by the bullet, but was injured by the shooting. The injury was caused indirectly by a bullet, which is effectively the same as getting shot to everybody but the most pedantic.

          • John Richard
            link

The FBI definitively stated that he was hit by a bullet. After Wray said it was questionable if he was hit by a bullet, then FBI deputy director Abbate stated on July 30 that there was never any doubt that a bullet had struck Trump’s ear. Trump claims he was struck by a bullet. I don’t see or hear any media arguing that he wasn’t hit by the bullet. It kind of is a big deal to get the facts straight about if Trump was actually hit by a bullet or it is made up, and I’d think there would be some kind of way to find out.

The answer is simple: they thought wrong and updated the story after further investigation. This is actually a good thing, not evidence of a conspiracy. It’s not even evidence of great incompetence, but understandable human error.
