Once more: “fetal cardiac activity” occurs before the fetus has a heart.

The cells that will become the heart start pulsing rhythmically before they are even a hollow space, let alone pumping blood.

You can see this in a petri dish.

Zebrafish need that rhythmic activity to form heart valves. They have unidirectional flow before the valves form, through some magic of resonance and pressure waves reflecting off arterial curves, and the resonance results in (IIRC) a stagnant spot where the valves will form. Do something to interfere with the mechanics and no valves form.

    This is excellent news.

However, the article is a bit light on the details. Like, was the state being sued? If so, who was suing them? Also, can this be appealed? Or is the legislature there going to have to try to pass a constitutional amendment allowing the practice of forced birth? I’ll go look it up, but I just find it odd that none of that context was provided in the article.

EDIT: here’s an article with more details and the full text of the judge’s ruling: https://www.wabe.org/breaking-judge-rules-georgias-restrictive-abortion-law-unconstitutional/

It will likely be appealed. The case is:

SISTERSONG WOMEN OF COLOR REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE COLLECTIVE, on behalf of itself and its members et al. v. STATE OF GEORGIA

EDIT: AP is continuously updating the article, so I imagine that they’ll probably add some or all of this context before long.

100% this happening sooner than later is better for the women of GA.

But politically speaking, I fear this will motivate a republican surge this close to the election.

But again, in no way would I put the future politics of the situation above the lives that will be impacted right now by this decision.

At the same time, Republican candidates will have to take a public stand against this, which may anger enough people to increase voter turnout.
