Casual reminder that US forces at Iwo Jima, one of their bloodiest invasions ever and often considered a pyrrhic victory due to the excessive loss of life, suffered an average of well under 800 casualties per day. That battle lasted only five weeks. All napkin math mind you, I would immediately defer on these numbers even to a history enthusiast. But it’s quite shocking to put Russian disregard for life into perspective, isn’t it

Battle of Stalingrad in WWII had over two million soldiers dead or wounded or captured in the course of eight months - that’s nearly 9.000 every single day (with a lot of peak days for sure).

And that’s not counting the civilians that were killed in that hell.

The modern Russian army is a joke by any stretch, but especially compared to the Reds of that era. They were a grim bunch. Same meat wave tactics, but at a far different scale and intensity. The Russian army of the next generation, if there is still one, is going to be an even more pitiful display. Their demographics are in a hopeless situation. They’ll end up a client state of China’s in our lifetime.

Those numbers would be more useful if you seperated them into casualties for one group, and injuries in a seperate group.

Because that 1140 number above? That’s JUST casualties, in JUST one day.

Now sure, maybe stalingrad mirrored or even exceeded those casualties seen today. But who’s to say it wasn’t 8500 injuries and 500 casualties? Or maybe it was 8500 casualties, and 500 injuries. Who’s to say? Hopefully somebody. Certainly not me. I have no idea. I’m just saying you can’t compare two different numbers when they measure different things.

Casulties are all soldiers who can no longer fight, due to being killed, captured, injured or something else. At least in military jargon it does.

Casualties is the term you’re looking for. I described them without using the exact word.

I…I know. That’s why I said that word in the first sentence. That’s kind of the point of my comment, was that you’re NOT using the word casualties so it’s an apples to oranges comparison with the numbers above.

I’m unclear if you didn’t read my comment, or if you misunderstood it.

No, you’re misunderstanding. ‘Casualties’ means ‘One who is injured, killed, captured, or missing in action through engagement with an enemy’.

You’re using the word to mean ‘dead’ and that is incorrect.

Additionally, it is extremely difficult for a side to accurately determine opfor dead vs. wounded. IIRC 3 wounded : 1 dead is a reasonable approximation.
