It’s strange how us older ex-metalheads are the first different generation music wise

Our parents were horrified by our taste in music. Their parents were horrified by their taste in music, their parents were horrified by their taste in music

We’re the first generation that listens to our kids’ music and goes

It’s the same though isn’t it? While it’s not the reason why we liked the music we liked (more punk than metal for me but same difference) it was always a bonus if your parents didn’t like it. That’s exactly the reaction that kids are getting from their parents now!

Well there are two areas to explore here. The quality of the music and it’s message. And the parenting we endured. I became a metal head for both reasons. My parents music didn’t resonate with me. The over simplified music structure just bored me. There wasn’t anything epic about it. And then the message didn’t resonate when it was all happy rose gardens and unicorns. My dad was an abusive asshole. Metal gave me that angry outlet.

At least my mom understands where I come from even she doesn’t understand why I listen to what I listen to. She divorced him and shit changed. Now my son loves metal and his mom doesn’t get it.

Yeah I hear you, those experiences would no doubt stear you to something that provided an outlet. But, and I want to acknowledge that I’m not dismissing anything you endure, ultimately rebellion is what we’re talking about and the eventual outlet is almost irrelevant.

I’m glad you’re able to share music you like with you son.

Same with mine. She’s the reason I love Rammstein. We share music with each other a lot, it’s awesome. My dads more old fashioned and likes classic rock but he’ll tolerate me and my brother playing our favourite metal songs for him at least!

I wasn’t super into metal when I was a kid, I was more into funk and blues. But then my son decided to put on some garbage than he calls funk music. I was disgusted and promptly changed the song to sam and Dave.

I’m really into new metal bands though, because they are constantly releasing stuff. There are bands out there like Black Breath that will still melt your face off, but I really like the more experimental side of metal, with bands like Abstract Void, Unreqvited, and Botanist all pushing the envelope of what metal is.

Five Finger Death Punch is as close as you can possibly get to pop music without leaving the genre of metal completely. I don’t judge people if it’s their jam, I just think they are extremely mediocre at best. It’s no coincidence that the majority of their most popular songs are covers.

But hey, people like what they like.

I don’t get this point of view, maybe I should because it sounds logical. But again sometimes I want to listen to harpsichords in E by Bach. And sometimes I want to listen to hallowed be thy name from iron maiden, sometimes I want to listen to a nightmare to remember by dream theater, and sometimes I want to listen to wrong side of heaven by ffdp.

It’s like the same logic that I love eatimg healthy home made delicious filipino food every day of the week, by my excellent cook of a wife. And yet occasionally I get a craving for a menu at burger King with a monster energy drink.

It is as if there is redeemable factors in both

Tbf, the metal bands you mentioned are all on the operatic side of metal, which is a nice subgenre. Many metal fans would say that there are definitive bands which categorize one subgen vs another. I’ve never heard of Five Finger Death Punch, and thought the name was actually Five Flavored Fruit Punch. Maybe an opportunity for Weird Al here 😁

I tend to like pop metal the same way I like pop punk. It’s not going to make me feel anything but it’s catchy. It’s good for working out or working on the motorcycle and similar things where I want a driving background but don’t want to get way into it.

That being said, the kind of people who listen to FFDP put me off of their music. It’s like that’s the first metal they ever heard then decided to make it their whole personality.

I agree they are mediocre (at best), but as for sounding poppy, you’re forgetting we have a whole metal subgenre called hair metal.

Yeah but hair metal had raw sex appeal. They’d fuck your girl, and maybe you too, and you were ok with it. Sure it’s musically lighter, but they went hard. On the other hand, you assume 5FDP is on tour again because they’re behind on child support payments.

“Bon Jovi for Goth Dads” is the other one I enjoy. I love Ghost, Tobias writes exactly the music he wants. Not trying to be metal, he was heavily influenced by og heavy metal (Sabbath) and the theatrics of the glam/hair metal era (Kiss). Combine the two and ya, that’s just Ghost.

It’s very intentionally campy and fun, like year round Halloween.

To their defense, I think they are really self aware. The campiness and the theatrics are all intentional. It almost has a musical (the broadway kind) aspect to it. 5FDP actually believe they are hard.

I have no clue about music in general, but ffdp are pretty basic when it comes to their song structure, a lot of simple and repetitive rhythms. Add to that that they sound recorded better than live (IMO) and they’re American which can lead to prejudices in the metal community and the bands easy to joke about.

i think the reson behind that has little to do with the music. idk how it is now but a few years ago the band had baddd infighting and made it all public. i am talking up to the level of dissolving the band on stage, just to continue for the revenue the next day. I assume many of the ffdp haters were fans of the music back then, but got dissapointed by the musicans to the point they couldnt enjoy it anymore.

Remember if someone hates a thing, its likely they still care about it.

Idk what genres you like so here’s a few recommendations across a few genres. On phone so no links.

I’ve been obsessing over Hiræth lately, probably one of the best albums I have ever heard. It’s not a metal album, but it scratches that itch I have for metal, so it’s going on this list lol

      • Witching - Vernal (blackened sludge)
      • Flummox - Rephlummoxed (prog death/avant garde)
      • Mamaleek - Vida Blue (avant garde)
      • Rail Yard Ghosts - Hiræth (Blackgrass/Blackened folk punk, large band)
      • Woe - Hope Attrition (black metal/RABM)
      • Botanist - Paleobotany (Experimental Black metal)
      • An Abstract Illusion - Woe (prog death)

Metal bands can scream and growl as much as they want, they will never hit as hard as the last minute of “I love you, I’m going to blow up your school” by MOGWAI, or pretty much anything by SWANS.
