I guess mentioning Paris Hilton is a good draw to the article, but I’m guessing most people don’t know about the facilities she was put in for being a “troubled teen” and why the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act is so important because people still associate her with being the vapid socialite she played on TV.
If you don’t know much more, you can start by reading about her, but I also recommend the comic at Elan.school.
I think most people think about how she shot to stardom with a blow job. One Night in Paris is was put her to stardom above all the other vapid socialites.
Nah, she was already a wealthy heiress and had her own reality show before that video came out.
Which sucks because she didn’t release it or want it released.
*she
Sorry. I couldn’t help myself. No hard feelings tho.
Elan.school is a very rough and long read. It’s fantastic, but one should know that there are very heavy topics involved and it certainly isn’t for everyone.
Fair point. Thanks for the warning.
San Francisco will rename a post office in honor of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein
And here I thought I would never have to hear her name again. Fucking clueless neoliberal Democrats. It’s not enough she got rich fucking us over, now we’re expected to honor the memory of it. Wasn’t there a sewage treatment plant in need of a name?
Jello Biafra once called her the worst person he’d ever met. And added a “really” to that.
He also called her a “whore for police brutality”. She would personally come see police raids on punk shows in the early 80s in th SF area.
I hope it’s the post office in the tenderloin that takes general delivery mail for homeless people without an address.
I hope that post receives extra funding as that’s a very important service for an at-risk population. Things like that are when I’m very happy to pay taxes as they’re providing a needed service.
IIRC taxes don’t pay for the USPS. It’s funded by stamps and mail.
It’s funded by both. However since 1971 there have been efforts to privatize it, and trying to defund it by requiring the post office to keep liquid funds equal to the entire pension burden of it’s employees. Thankfully that requirement was lifted in 2022

Awesome to hear that stupid requirement is gone (for now)

Honestly, I think it’s hilarious. Imagine having a post office named after you.
Only two of those bills were worth mentioning. The one about trouble teen industry being more regulated and the college hazing accountability.
These are pretty serious times when he could be doing some data scrubbing, premptively pardoning others so they might act now in ways trump wont like, perma-loaning eq to allies, and just generally trump-proofing. But instead he’s signing a national bird act. Good old ‘nothing will fundamentally improve’ Joe Biden. What an arrogant doddering asshat.
Signing doesn’t take him any time at all, but that 50-ish irrelevant bills were given limited Senate time doesn’t speak well to how seriously the Democrats are taking this limited window.
General reminder that we do not hold the House, greatly impacting our ability to pass the laws we’d like.
Dems always use that excuse even when they do have majority. It’s always “boo hoo the Republicans are stopping us again…” They’re just another flavor of oligarch that panders to a particular group of people for votes, which is why they’re doing nothing useful right now. I’m sure if they actually cared, they could find 9 Republicans that have a shred of a concept of wanting to save America for votes, and play the politics dance to get things done, but that smells too much like work.
Finding 9 repubs willing to stand up to Trump these days is easier said than done. You’re aware, I assume, of what happened to the last batch.
Regarding work, how about a whole bunch of judicial appointments? He already broke Trump’s record.
Yeah, but the Senate alone can do things other than process useless laws. Squeeze out another judge or two.
I suppose 2 of those bills will be stinkers, kind of like his pardons.
