From what I hear, she was no passive beneficiary, making decisions and actively participating in the regime’s crimes.

There’s thousands of people out there with cancer who can’t get the best care, or even adequate care. I hope no one is foolish enough to make her a priority

I can’t eat solid food (it’s a long story that I’m sure many people are sick of), but I have Amy’s Golden Lentil dahl almost every day. I love it.

It’s actually really simple and easy, and glazed is a misnomer because I don’t know another word, and it works best with bone-in country style ribs. So, either salt and pepper your desired cut of pork beforehand, OR you can put the s&p in the mustard. Not sure which I prefer. Pre-heat your pan; I like cast iron. Liberally baste your pork with Dijon mustard (I have tried other varieties, and dijon works the best). Fry them up in the pan. You will lose a lot of the mustard crust to the pan, and I have not figured out a way around this. That said, the mustard caramelizes in the heat, and you get a wonderful mix of sweet and savory at just the right ratio. That’s basically it. It’s my favorite way to do Country Style ribs.

After reading the article, she is in Russia. I’m sure she will receive the best care moscow has to offer, which is still better than a lot of people.

That’s true. Russia does have really good doctors - if you have money. And you have to be able to withstand yelling and belittling but as a Russian you get used to that.

I’m so sorry to hear that. I hope they find some qualified care soon. Is the problem the access (money, status) or can’t they find proper treatment for other reasons?

A young doctor’s notebook - based on a Russian novel from Michael Bulgakov. I’m so sad they discontinued it 😭 I think about it once a week at least!

But it takes place around WWI, so… Not exactly a 1:1 portrayal of Russian medicine today

That’s a perverted amount of money. But yeah that should do.

So it’s not like she is being denied treatment. She is being denied a specific treatment in a specific prestigious clinic in Britain. But honestly, Russians can cure cancer just as well ( - provided you have the money to pay them). Moscow has prestigious clinics and great resources. I’d much rather get treatment there than in some rural British hospital to be honest.

This comment leads me to believe that you haven’t had much ‘up close and personal’ experience with cancer… (Not trying to talk down to you in saying that or anything, btw, though you’re super fortunate if that’s indeed the case.)

Just for reference: during the early 00’s I would get a bill for somewhere around $10k each month for my dad’s chemo infusions alone. This went on for at least 2 - 3 years, if memory serves, which - for those who aren’t keeping score at home - ended up totalling nearly $500k by the time he died.

Obviously, not every treatment is created (or priced) equally, but… I think you can probably see what I’m getting at, anyway

Maybe this is just an oversimplification on my part, but I think of it like this: Say that my INSERT RELEVANT FAMILY MEMBER HERE spends weeks/months/decades of their life violently oppressing a population just beating the absolute shit out of someone(s) in order to gain - or maintain - some sort of benefit. I’m fully aware of this activity, yet still have no problems availing myself of these clearly ill-gotten gains year after year. Have I committed any crimes? Yeah, maybe I was, say, married to a dictator who did, but… How responsible am I?

To put it another way: If you saw someone attempting to attack/stab/etc someone else across the street from you, do you feel that you have a moral imperative to call 911 even if you do not personally know either party (having no political power or responsibility, say)?

“All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing…”

Ok, and…? Do you have a point of some kind here, or are we just going to simplistically cut semantic hairs and call it a day? Cuz if it’s gonna be the latter, I don’t really even understand the point of commenting to begin with since we’re apparently just going to go over vocabulary instead of, say, discussing… oh, I dunno, the actual point?

(The actual point of the conversation - and today’s vocabulary word, coincidentally - is ETHICS. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ )

The point was pretty clear, unless you make being obtuse on the internet a hobby of yours. Small advice: This is not how you get people to discuss with you. On the other hand, it’s a great way to get most people to avoid talking to you at all.

The actual point of the conversation is “Has she actually committed any crimes?”. If you look up the definition of today’s vocabulary word, you’ll find that it has no bearing on the actual point.

I wondered this too, but she’s already in Moscow. Any care she can receive there, is still equal to or better than what the average Russian can get.
