In an offseason that figures to bring change following a 6-11 finish, the San Francisco 49ers made their first major move on Monday, relieving Brian Schneider of his duties as special teams coordinator, sources told ESPN, a day after the season ended.

Sad to see someone lose their job but it’s not really a surprise. In a season of frequent calamity, special teams plays have been among the worst.
Now if the Niners can work on:
- Fewer injuries
- Fewer idiotic penalties at crucial moments (on both O and D)
Maybe the talent assigned to the unit just wasn’t there but the whole unit sucked when it mattered. Huge mistakes in those early close losses to the Rams and Cardinals.
Niners just need an average special teams with a decent kicker to win games, so something has to change.
