Bob Ross got fame, the good feeling of teaching something, a job where he just paints calmly for a living, he got a good life out of it.

He got an entire art supply empire with franchises that sold painting courses (and maybe still do?).

I think he also got screwed out of most of the proceeds and possibly even the use of his own name because he had a shady business partner.

Bob Ross gets a share of the price for selling your soul to Google. He’s a tool in corporate abuse of humanity. Otherwise he would’ve long time ago quit YouTube with a clear public statement.

Facebook is a product that cost billions to develop. It scaled so fast at some point, they developed a big data framework on top of MySQL, cuz refactoring wasn’t an option. Their tech stack is the funniest chimera out there. And it only happened because everyone loved it so much. Facebook costs billions per year to run. And you get it for free. I mean, you pay with your data, just like on YouTube.

Lemmy, you show as usual that you cannot even basic math. You’re not entitled to criticize capitalism until you learn how to count. You sound stupid.

Am I missing something? Bob Ross died 10 years before YouTube became a thing, the videos of him aren’t really his and I doubt he’s making any public statements about them

Come on, that’s not fair. We get some things:

My neighbor got robbed when she posted about being away on holiday. What an experience!

And there was that time that some users had private messages made public due to a security glitch. I’m sure that ended more than a few relationships!

We get mass surveillance – that’s a pretty good one, yeah?.. No?

I will say, he did get to paint on TV and know that maybe somewhere someone was better off for knowing he existed.

Bob Ross absolutely got something. Something worth more than any sum of gold.

Of course, he must’ve gotten a sense of accomplishment from this.

When I contribute to an open source project I get the same feeling too. I can even brag about it during interviews. But, It’s not why I do it. I learnt a lot from open source projects and I am just paying it forward. What I got from these projects is more than what I am able to contribute to.

But, Life is not a zero-sum game. We don’t have to do things in exact proportions. That would make it a business transaction. Bob Ross definitely gave a lot to his viewers. In my eyes, that makes him a hero.

Funny, but like, nobody would use Facebook if it was literally just a blank page.

I use Facebook for a lot of hobby stuff. I look for hobby communities on Lemmy in the same categories but they’re way smaller and less active. I wish everyone would move to Lemmy but there’s a barrier to entry which isn’t the case for Facebook.

Don’t be afraid to evangelize! If someone seems really disappointed with Facebook, introduce them to Lemmy! The main barrier to entry is teaching them what an instance is.

Facebook Marketplace is pretty good though, at least in the US. All other Facebook features are rubbish
