I know this book gets recommended at every opportunity around here, so continuing the tradition: Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky is a wonderful sci-fi novel that (among many other things) explores the gender roles of spider society.
The ones that build webs are. The males of orb weavers/cobweb spiders wander from place to place, always on the move looking for food and sexy ladies.
One imagines they’re either spider drinks or said spider was going to the bathroom pretty often and they were out for awhile.
